cold start low idle to high idle?

i have a 90 4runner with a 22re.

at cold start, the idle is at 800 rpm then when it gets warmed up it jumps up to 1100 rpm. i thought it supposed to be the opposite where its high at cold start then drops down to normal idle?

i adjusted the idle from 1100 to 800 when its warm, and turn the truck off to let it cool. when i started it back up, it had a hard time starting because the idle was too low. it was at 500 rpm at cold start, then jumped up to 800 when warmed up.

could this be the idle air control valve (IACV) going bad? or something in my throttle body?

You need to test and adjust the iacv. When you open it up, you will see it's closed at the cold setting. You need to test the resistance to be sure it's still good, then adjust it so it's at least halfway open at cold. Mine is about 2/3 open, and I start up at 1500, then slowly drops to 750 when warm. But when I bought it I was same as you. Start up cold at 500, slowly went to 800 when warm.

Edit: you have a 90, not even sure if you iacv valve is the same or if it evens adjusts the same.

how do i adjust it? i only see a coolant hose running to it, no wires or anything. i thought it was just an enclosed wax thing that melts when it gets warms to open up the valve? the only wires i see are going to the tps.

Got a pic? Mine (87) sits under the TB. Has an air line into the back of the iacv out the front and tags into the tb. Also has 2 coolant lines. The electrical plug is in the back. It has a small 6mm nut on the back that you loosen, adjust, tighten.

Or you can adjust it like the Fsm says you can.

It doesn't involve disassembling it. At least for mine. But then again, you don't have a rig listed in your sig.

The older versions have the electrical connector, the newer ones only have coolant lines.
