Cold Start Injector

My boyfriend's 88 runner has been starting rough ever since it got cold out. The gas mileage is horrible (about 100 miles per tank in a V6 16 gallon tank) and it sounds pretty bad when you rev the engine. Once it's warmed up, it runs fine again. So, from reading other posts, we are pretty sure it's the cold start injector. Does that sound right?

Anyways... we are going to be working on the truck this weekend and decided that if we could, we would like to replace the cold start injector too. However, we need some help and direction on how to do it. Anyone have some ideas as to how we should go about replacing it? We're not really sure where to start... we have the Haynes manual to go off of and that's about it. Thanks!

6 miles per gallon? lol. Do you already have the link for the FSM?

http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...88coldstar.pdf

I like to use a combination of it and a Haynes or Chiltons.

Good Luck, I don't have the 3.0, but maybe try unpluging the injector and see if it gets better.

(looks like Rob beat me, the link he gave you i think is for the 22re tho)

Few months ago my CSI malfunctioned and dumped several gallons of gas into the motor (it was backing up thru the exhaust manifold). The wire in the harness that controls it corroded and it wouldn't shut off. My mechanic traced the problem down, and bypassed it. I've been running without it for about 3+ months.

On cold starts it takes a little to crank it over, but a squirt of starter fluid and it fires right up. It idles high (around 1800 rpm) for a few minutes then drops down to around 1K RPM and eventually settles to normal after the oil gets going.

The ĊĊĊĊty gas mileage is a problem, though. Seafoam the motor and see if it improves any.

Thats the way i have to crank mine now with starting fluid... It runs fine and gets around 27 miles to the gallon.. but it would be nice not having to pop the hood every cold morning

We have seafoamed the engine and not much change if any. It actually is a completely rebuilt engine that we replaced just this last summer. So, new engine but all the rest are old parts... is there anything else that be causing such a HORRIBLE gas mileage problem that we should be looking into?

I also forgot to ask about how long it would take to replace the cold start injector? How much work is involved?

If it's the 3.0 it takes 5 to 10 minutes to replace.

The hardest part is getting the clip off the connector.

I've used Fram oil filters and dino oil in all my stuff for 30 years and never had trouble
I bet MOST people who say "swap in a 3.4" have NEVER changed any engine nevermind converting to a different type

Can anyone describe or show me a picture of where the CSI is?

Another way to check if the coldstartinjector or the enginetemp sensor, Take the plug off the CSI, If its harder to start then the CSI is fine, If no change then It may be the Enginetemp sensor, Thats on the backside of the engine and its the one on the left.
This is also a symtom of a O2 sensor not working or warming up, Check its harness and plug.

Is it not possible that the CSI is just plain leaking even when the plug is disconected????Hence the bad MPG.
