Code 42 Rough Idle
My truck started running bad this morning like on 2 cyl. Got the code pulled and it is the code 42 VSS My speedo has not worked in 6 months, so that cannot be my problem, could it?
Now the thing is running fine.
I pulled the cold start injector wire off,no help, pulled plug off tps, engine just revs up.
Last week it went thru a spell of idling a little higher than normal, but that went away.
When it stops this frog strangler of a down pour, I am going to ohm the cold start injector and the tps.

The two go hand-in-hand so yes, it very well could be your problem. Get that replaced before you delve further.

If the speedo's still not working, and you're getting a code 42, then you have a VSS and a problem with it. It's a reed type sensor like the one in the link I posted. One of the first things the manuals recommend checking, though, is the wiring.....like angrydog suggested. Sensor may not be bad.
On your idle, I don't recall having idle issues when the speed sensor went out on my wife's 4rnr. Of course, it's electronically controlled automatic with an electronic speedo, etc. But, when it went out (from a wreck I had), I had all kinds of shifting and running issues. I don't believe, though, it effected the engine itself so much as the transmission. My best assessement is that, with an ECT (electronic tranny) is that the ECU couldn't control the shifting patterns correctly, and that that's all the speed sensor is for..........the tranny and not EFI control. So, with that in mind, my guess is your idle is due to something different.
It's been difficult finding the correct info to go by considering specifications and applications vary from one manufacturer to the next and one model to the next. Plus, the actual Toyota tech articles I have my hands don't go into much details about VSS functions. I'll keep looking, though. In the meantime, I just keep guessing based on experience.

I don't have a VSS on this truck. My speedo is cable driven. Whatever it was, it;s gone for now.
It will show back up when I am five miles up some remote road in "R Kan Saw"
The grounds were all good.
Gonna check the TPS tomorrow morning.
Thanks for the help.

Well, Tortis, I don't know what to tell you then, man. I mean if you get a code 42 ever, then that's a trouble code for a vehicle speed sensor circuit. Even with a cable operated speedo, you'd have one. It's just at the back of the speedometer in the dash as opposed to being on the tailend of your transfer case or on the tranny. '95 4rnr's, atleast, have a set up like that. But, if the code's gone, it's gone I guess. Yeah.....come on up to "R Kan Saw". No need to go to the Bermuda triangle for weird crap......

Speaking as someone who has driven a 4runner for over a year with a 42 code, it doesn't go away... it lurks. Then when your day is wonderful and there's not a cloud in the sky and you have your new fence materials that you're leaving Home Depot with looking forward to getting started on improving your new house... BAM . The tranny whines out in second gear and your stuck in the middle of the parking lot. Prompting you to then
It's there. Ignore it at your own irritation.
