code 13 and code 14(ignition signal and rpm)

the truck: 1989 toyota pickup 4x4 5spd 22re (170k)

the problem:

OK well i got this truck a week ago or so, and since then i have become increasingly frustrated. Initially, the truck was throwing a handfull of codes and hardly able to start let alone run but after sorting a few things out i had narrowed it down to code 13 and code 14(ignition signal and rpm signal). At this point the truck will start right up maybe idle ok for a couple minutes at longest and then stall out and throw the codes. when i got these codes i figured the coil was maybe bad or worst case scenerio the distributor.
So far i have replaced all the spark plugs, the cap and rotor, the plug wires, the coil, the control module/ignitor, the distributor and even the freakin ECU! i have spent a fair amount of time looking around for loose wires and have come up empty handed. does anyone have ANY ideas?

thanks so much in advance and happy holidays yota tech!

side note.. things i replaced b4 i got to this point include pcv valve, air filter, fuel filter, full brand new exhaust fromt the manifold back and i changed the oil twice.

Look around for dirty, or corroded ground straps. I had this problem on my chevy pickup. Replaced all kinds of stuff, and got similar codes. Finally I cleaned the ground strap from the frame to the ecu and its run perfectly ever since. Just an idea...

22reforme,
Any luck getting rid of codes 13 & 14? I have the same ones. They've been around for a couple years on my Toyota. The intermittent sputtering and coughing has gotten so bad now that it's almost undriveable. I've tried all you have short of replacing the distributor and ECU. Let me know if you have had any luck. Thanks

are u using the factory manual to troubleshoot this? all 3 codes relate to the leftmost connector on the ecu: 13 is NE signal, 14 is IGF signal, 43 is STA signal. , im wondering if there is a short somewhere in your wiring, or a problem with the connector or junction boxs.

Sounds like a failed/ failing igniter. The distributor sends its signal to the igniter which then converts the signal and sends that to the computer. Hence the codes for rpm and igniter signal. ECU then send the signal back to the igniter. Igniter then fires the coil. Find a good working OEM used igniter. Aftermarket are junk and plain dont work.
