I don't know if the clutch has ever been done on my 93 22re pickup. a mechanic friend pointed out that the clutch was slipping when it's under a big load, like hitting the gas hard going up a hill. I have been noticing for maybe almost a year it and didn't know what it was. how long until the thing totally goes out and I'm stranded? if I baby it will it last indefinitely?

it won't last indefinitely, no. it's something you should be planning on doing, and start acquiring parts now, rather than when it gets unusable.

mine has also been slipping for about a year, and i've had the clutch parts ready as soon as i noticed it. i just picked up an engine hoist today, too (good deal), so that will make things easier.

also depends on how inconvenient it is to you to be "inconvenienced". do it on your schedule, or the trucks'. i'm planning on taking care of it within the next few weeks.

Not to be rude but that question is sort of like asking when a light bulb will burn out. If I could answer that I would be a billionaire. I have had them slip for a few years and also have had them slip for a month and done. but I would look into getting it done/doing it sooner than later. It really sucks driving home without a clutch and using the starter at stop lights.

that isn't going to be the problem. the problem is eventually the clutch will slip so much the truck won't move. starting in gear won't be necessary.

Just let someone else drive the truck .

You will start on the clutch as soon as you get the truck home.

Well, I've had clutches last a really long time even after noticably slippy, you just gotta be nicer to them or decide to fix it. Wallytoo is right; either on your time or the trucks. I had a bad clutch limp along for a couple years with nicer driving though. Minus first gear. Then second. heh heh heh.

I have a question about clutches though, and I'm so new I can't start my own thread; I have a 89 5spd 4wd P.U. that is confounding me. It was running fine. Then it decided not to shift while running. So I parked it in my inclined driveway in reverse (so it didn't roll down into street traffic) and left it for a month while life happened. I thought it was a hydraulic problem so I replaced the M.cylinder and slave, but nothing. The clutch won't return without my fingers picking it off the floor. So I got an estimate to have it hauled off to replace the clutch (I have no proper set up for this, its just not something I can fix as is). But it won't disengage from reverse. On, Off, it ain't moving. So before the tow-truck shows up I'd like to free it up so it, uh, rolls....any ideas?

You probably can't shift it because the gears are held by the weight of the truck, and without being able to disengage the clutch you can't release that weight. You might be able to get some palookas to push the truck until you can get it out of gear, but then the truck will roll back over them. Or you could get another vehicle to push gently, but that's a good way to mess up two bumpers.

Hey, thanks, Scope103. Its lifted and on a hill. And it IS the vehicle I use to help other people out with so maybe I'll call some palookas over (grin). Actually now you got me thinkin...If I can get said palookas to push, I can anchor the truck with its frame-
welded bumper, some crane straps and a shackle or two to the house foundation. Yeaaaah, that'll do it. Thanks again

Or just call the tow truck. Believe me, they've dealt with this before and they'll get it on the truck whether or not it rolls. They do it all the time, especially for repos or illegal parking when they don't have the keys. Those hydraulic winches they use don't much care about the resistance of a little old 4000 lb truck.

My rule of thumb...if you can start in 3rd gear...just go ahead and swap'er out....there are much harder things to do on these trucks
