clutch slave bleeding weirdness... thoughts?
Hi,
I've just replaced the clutch, rear main seal and flywheel on a 91 3.0 4runner. The clutch slave was working before I started as I verified the slave was pushing the lever.
During the job, I started the engine with the trans out of the truck and let it run to verify I had solved the oil leaks. To do this I pushed the clutch down to engage the starter.
Now, I have no clutch fluid movement. I have pulled a vacuum on the line itself as high up as the firewall to prove that i didn't kink the line somewhere. The vacuum will hold at 25 inches for 30 minutes without dropping, there is fluid in the master cylinder and the cap is off the master cylinder. I have no clue what I did but feel that I must have flipped a valve or something funny when I pushed the clutch in while the slave was in the air.
Anybody had trouble and what am I going to run into if I try to pull the clutch master cylinder off and try to blow it out or clean it out?
Thanks for your ideas.

You may have overextended the master cylinder.
Have you tried removing the line from the MC and pumping it?
Seeing if any fluid comes out [obviously with a full res].
If none does, you need a new master.

I imagine you spewed the guts of you slaver cylinder out across the garage floor somewhere. happened to us while the motor was out and my son pressed the clutch in while it was detached. new AISIN was not very expensive and is another job that won't have to be done for a while.
but, the tell-tale sign was the puddle of fluid under it. if you didn't have a puddle, not sure.

It's possible that without the slave pushing fluid back to the master, the piston in the master is stuck at the far end of the bore. Maybe try blowing some pressure up the line to the master then bench bleeding it.
You don't have the "Clutch Start Cancel" switch?

You pushed the clutch pedal in when the transmission was out.
Where was the slave cylinder??
Had you removed the line and left it attached or was it hanging there.
When you pushed the pedal it had to push the piston and fluid out of the slave cylinder if the boot kept it from flying across the room .
fill the master cylinder with fluid check the piston and rod are in the slave cylinder in the correct place.
bleed as needed
it is no different then having any type of failure in this system

Thanks guys.
No there was no fluid leaking from the slave and yes the piston was still in place. That was the weird part, even with the slave disconnected and a pump holding -25 inches of vacuum and a full master cylinder I couldn't get more than a few drops of fluid to come out.
So I disconnected the MC rod from the pedal lever and pulled it back a little and wiggled it around. When I did so I heard a sucking gurgling sound and then all the fluid went out. After installing the slave back on it and bleeding it works perfect.
So it took me 2.5 hrs to pull the tranny, about the same on getting the bearing out of the crank and about the same to get that slave thing figured out. The joys of learning.
To get the bearing out I finally ended up using an air chissel to break out all but the inner race then I could get the rented puller and slide hammer to work on the outer race.
