Clown mechanic messed up truck:need advice

Great site
Its been very useful getting my truck back togather lots of information.this is were I'm at now.I took my 93 4runner(3.0) to this recommed mechanic to fix a burnt vavle, well very long story, but two and a half months later truck still not fixed I had to finnish the job myself. Now it running again and it does't run that much better on 6 cylinders then it did on 5.So heres the latest
The truck sounds good,no power(won't go much over 70,takes awhile to get there)It runs best with the timing at 22 btdc or so(off the scale)if I set it to 10 btdc it barly moves. And the vavle clearence is way off, really loose. It really seems like the timing belt is off but I've done it twice now and the marks seem right to me.Is it possible to switch the cams around? or can they only go one way.well I appreciate all the help I can get, thanks in advance

Have you checked for engine codes?

It's VERY easy to leave a tooth off the tension between the right & left cam sprockets. You have to set the crank to TDC 0 degrees & pull the timing belt TIGHT to the driver side sprocket. Cock it off to the right a tiny bit to engage the correct teeth then rotate it back left to align with the timing mark on the backing plate. Then do the same to the passenger side sprocket, cocking it to the right a little bit to engage the correct teeth, then rotating back to align with the timing mark. Then take up all the slack with tensioner pulley. It is very easy to leave some slack with the top center idler pulley.

TIMING: have you shorted the correct terminals before setting the timing? It will read WAY high if not. Did you have the FSM to refer to? http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...fsm/index.html

Yeah checked the codes. nothing.I've checked the marks after rotating the engine a couple of times and it seems right. Also I'm using the mark behind the cover no the one with the numbers on it. I did cross t1 and e1 and it didn't appear to change the timing when I unhooked it while the engine was running.

Why do you want them to be switch around? My truck has that problem, can't go much over 70 mph, and it even can't reach the 55 mph so I say forget the auto and swap it to the 5 speed tranny. I think the TPS is off so try to adjust the tps.

Just to be certain; it's TE1 and E1....

Also, are you marks EXACTLY on these locations when you are at 0 degrees timing?

See how the passenger side it aimed at the little white dot and NOT the bolt? I'm guessing you're at the bolt....??

Yeah as right on as could be. Its not perfect though.Like the cam spoket has play on the guide pin. I see that there a lot of confusion around the timing belt and getting it on right. I geuss I should of mentioned that I was a diesel mechnic for long time and the marks seem right, not my first timing belt. One problem is I've only driven the truck before when it was running on 5 cylinders, seems like it should have more with 6.We used to have pathfinder with a 3.0 and the 4runner seems like a 2.0! conpared to it.I'm wondering if the clown sabotaged my truck because he was pretty mad for awhile when I told him I was coming to get it and called him on all his lies.

You have play on your guide pins?? How much? There should only be the tiniest amount. Also, doesn't that go away when you tighten the bolts??

IS the belt good & tight on the driver side & between the cam sprockets?

Once you set your timing you should set your warm idle @ 750 rpm, + or - 50 rpm. I keep mine @ 800.
