Well, in 4HI or 4LO... the front DS starts to spin.

Maybe that's what is clicking.

Do you have auto or manual hubs? If manual, the front axles will start to spin in 4HI or 4LO whether the hubs are locked or not.

Maybe that's what is clicking.

Try it in 4HI... but with hubs unlocked.

Then try it in 2HI... but with the hubs locked.

What happens? When does it click?

Is the sound a ratchet When accellerating, and decellerating, or going around a corner, or when you first start out, or when coming to a stop or just constant? All of these can be different problems. Maybe u have a front locker and dont know(going around corners) cv's (any speed in 4wheel drive), When starting out or coming to a stop(U-joints). Easyest way is to go to an alignment shop, get a free estimate on whats wrong.

But you should never drive in 4WD Hi or low on pavment.

I used to do it all the time just to keep the system lubricated.
