Cleaning oil galleys on 3.0 rebuild

Hello all,

Just wondering how to remove the what appears to be a steel ball used in the build process of both the block and heads on the 3.0's oil galleys. Im rebuilding the engine on my 450,000 mile extra cab and got stuck here.

Thanks Tweasl

Most rebuilders tig a rod onto the ball and slide hammer them out.

Thanks,

I was thinking that myself, so that's what I'll do.

Much appreciated

I read on an engine builder site(possibly oregon engine builder) that they use a tig and heat the ball, and it pretty much falls out.

are you going to tap and use a plug to reseal the galley? In other words, how much do you trust reusing the steel ball to seal it once you're done?

I'll first hit it with the tig torch and when it cools and contracts, hopefully it will fall out. If not then I'll weld a rod on there make a small slide hammer and beat it out. After, I'll tap for NPT and plug. Lots of other heads and blocks use the NPT plugs and this should be no different except the steel ball is cheaper for production.
