Hi guys I just developed a clang coming from my front wheel of all places when driving and hitting small bumps/cracks in the road? I can push the drivers side front corner up and down, no clang. But if/when I whack the tire with a rubber mallot I can hear the sound...

I realise this is a long shot and a pretty vague description - but any ideas on what cause this? (I removed the tire and tried to hit the rotor with the mallot but couldn't replicate the sound when hitting the brake rotor....) HIt the tire with it off and no sound. Mounted the tire back on, hit it - sounds back. WTF??

Bearings perhaps? CV boots are new and not cracked....

put a lug nut wrench on a lug nut in the 12 o'clock position and pull up on the wrench if there is play it could be you ball joints or wheel bearings next step is to remove the wheel and repeat it again and see if you can see the ball joint move.

ive got the same thing going on in my truck(solid axle) i think its the wheel bearings.

THanks guys - Cymon - I wil try your suggestion, but just for clarity do I do this with the tire still mounted? Or tire removed (bolt screwed back on) and up on jack stands??

x2 on the bearings, mabey ball joint but most likely bearings

Ok - going to be a busy July then. I have to replace my valve cover gaskets now too. After doing my head gasket and timing belt last summer the stupid valve cover gaskets are now leaking pretty good.

Sorry guys - one other question.
What are 'races' in relation to replacing bearings. One of the links embedded in the link I posted above talks about punching out the "races" what are these things? Are they on this diagram? If so - what are they called on this diagram ?

Races are what the bearings spin on. On your link, they'd be the closest rings next to the rotor and hub assembly.
