Check Engine Light (Code 71 - EGR) question

I have a 1991 Toyota Pickup 4WD, 22RE, all manual. Last year my Check Engine Light came on, I checked the code and it is EGR. For other reasons I had to put in a newly rebuilt engine. During the engine installation, I removed and cleaned my EGR valve, cleaned the filter, replaced the Temp Sensor (which was black with crud at the tip), checked the vac hoses which are clean and connected correctly. The EGR valve is working fine. I reset the light by pulling out and putting back in the EFI fuse. The Check Engine Light stayed off for around 200 miles, but then came back on! again, it is EGR (Code 71). The truck runs great with the new engine and also put in a rebuilt transmission since my bearing were going out in my old one. I am on my 3rd engine and 3rd transmission with 382,000 miles. Any ideas on why I am still getting a Code 71?

Bad vacuum switch if the egr vacuum hoses are hooked up correctly. Double check your vacuum pod next to the egr. I had a similar problem, changed out my vacuum switch and my code disappeared. If you have any other problems, don't hesitate to pm me or post.

Vacuum Switch? I have CA emissions, is this switch the same as the Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV)? Is it located at the top of the engine near the valve cover? Where do you recommend I purchase this part? Thanks for helping me.

Not near the valve cover. Should be on the passenger side fender, below the fuse block. Follow the vacuum lines that lead into the plenum

Not the vsv next to the egr. Junkyards are hit and miss, some parts chains do carry those parts

I believe the VSV is for the 3VZE engine, not the 22re.

All answers, of course, are found in The Good Book. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...18egrsyste.pdf Run the diagnostics as recommended in the manual, and see where they lead. In addition, take a cue from the condition of your Temp Sensor. At this vintage, the EGR passage into the intake manifold can accumulate so much "crud" that it is partially or totally blocked. Blocked: no flow: no temp rise: Code 71. My experience is with the 3VZE, but I suspect the 22re could have the same issues.

You don't mention the smog situation in your locale, but a non-working EGR system will almost certainly fail you with high NOx. In addition to contributing to acid rain.

Vacuum diagram from a 1992 22re. California emissions. My location was wrong, but the 22re does have the vsv.
