Charging system?

ok...i believe my alternator went out on me a couple days ago..lol..right now im running off of a deep cycle battery because i havent been able to get to work on the truck yet..well when i put the battery back into the truck after charging it..i could hear a click..like some kinda of valve closing..or a solenoid clicking..so i touched the NEGATIVE cable to the negative post a few times to hear this sound to pinpoint it and then i blew the big 30A fuse coming off the positive cable..and now the truck wont start..

can i just replace the fuse(and my alternator) and call it good?????

A fuse won't blow without excessive current. It's likely you have a wire that has broken insulation and is grounding somewhere. Take a good look at the wire feeding the fuse that blew and if it's good, look at the wiring to the components that the fuse feeds.

You blew the fuse by causing the arc between the negative cable and battery post. most likely but other problems may exist.

What leads you to think the alternator is broke have you tested it or had that done could be something as simple as bad grounds . or the wire to fuse block has died of old age..

I have seen people replace an alternator the only problem was the belt.

No, I don't think so. You would need more than 30 amps to blow that fuse and in a normal circuit, there is no way to get 30 amps(+) by just arcing the cable to the terminal. There has to be a short in the circuit.

no i have not tested the alt. yet...thats what im doing in about an hour..

the only bad ground that i have found was my negative cable (a part of it was just bare wire)..i'll look some more though! its very easy to miss something like that..lol thanks for the input!

There is no way of knowing what kinds of loads are on any single circuit that may have been energized at the time the cables where removed . Unless you are the person doing it.

If the fuse blew when he was arcing the cable to the battery post. I say that is what caused it to happen with the information at hand. As stated there could be other problems.

..so now im getting no spark????...and the coil is getting so hot you cant ever hardly touch it?????

so obviously i've got a short somewhere right?

now i have NO idea where to start..i replaced the alt., the 80amp fuse that blew(still dont know why it blew???) and it has a new negative cable..havent replaced the positive cable because it was just replaced about a yr ago..

and the wire coming from the starter to the positive cable is getting hot too??

the 7.5amp ignition fuse was blown under the dash too..i also replaced it with the dome light fuse..lol

no more fuses are blown either..

In replacing the alternator it is possible you pulled the coil wire off enough so it looks like it is still on but doesn`t make contact .

another thing possible is that you have a wire off or poor connection some where at the positive battery terminal

If the cables are getting hot just when you are trying to start they could be to small or you have been cranking to long.

but my dad's gonna check the junkyards to find a good used one...

if that doesnt fix the problem..then im screwed..lmao
