changing pinion seal without messing with bearing preload?

can it be done?? i really dont want to go through haveing to rebuild my third just for a pinion seal...and i just unbolt the pinion swap seals and bolt it back to about the same spot?? im gonna have to do this front and rear...SAS

take the 3rd member off and then check the wear patterns... that's the safest thing to do

I killed my rear end by just replacing the seal before and that's after following what the manual said in the seal replacement procedure!

I just swapped the seal like 30k ago. I ain't gonna take it apart to check.

its should have a dimple in the pinion and the pinion nut. just line them back up when it goes back together.

thats what i was thinking...but i didnt kno if it would effect preload or not..ill try it and see what happens...i didint know wtf i was doing the first time i did this..(when i first got the truck) and just took it off then tightened the crap out of the nut....haha no bueno

as long as it lines back up you should be good. maybe count the turns for good measure? i gotta do this too. mine just got so bad i think im spraying cars behind me with gear oil lol

uhh their stock so im assuming crush sleeves...and yeah i just filed up my front diff last night and i got home from work today and its all on my driveway but im prolly gonna mark it...maybe go a wee bit tighter...as long as wabs next comment doesent thwart me lol

Solid pinion spacers make a big difference.

You should rebuild them with solid pinion spacers and be done with it.

Regeared? Lockers?

Otherwise you just remove the pinion seal and count where it seals back and don't over tighten it and restake the nut. Sometimes you cannot reuse the old nut as there is nothing left to stake.

10-4 thanks wab...and yes i used a solid spacer the last time i regeared...but that ended terribly...(not cuz the solid spacer lol) but these are stock gears with a welded rear diff and will prolly stay that way for awile...when i regear ill have them rebuilt by someone who knows what their doing...either zuk or a local guy here thats built dozens of toys...

seemed to work perfectly...i knew i had replaced my rear seal before and i did.. a few weekes before i stoped driving it i had a peice of thin plastic like painters visqueen wrap around my driveshaft about 1000 times..and well when it did that it made its way into my pinion seal a lil (doesnt have the seal guard?)..well i thought a lil i pulled about a handfull out from imbetween my pinion oil control washer and seal lol destroyed my seal...so lesson learned beware of visqueen in the road!

FYI- it sucks but Master Zuk has retired from doing gears. His website should be up for another few years though.

Scotty from Addicted Off Road is said to be pretty dang good at gear set up.

man that sucks...yeah i got a local guy that i wheel with that will gurantee they wont break or he'll replace em

mark the amount of threads on the end of the pinion..
you certainly won't hurt anything, just don't go tightening a ridiculous amount.

You'll be fine - just take note of where the dimple is on the pinion nut. Like mentioned before, don't go crazy when you tighten it back down. In a few cases I ended up tightening the nut down a 1/4 to 1/2 more than where it previously was only because it didn't seem tight enough. No issues whatsoever.
