Chance to Buy a '99 5VZFE Engine

I would be buying it to swap into my 89 4runner. The thing is, it's just an engine No harness, no computer, no plumbing. I did a 22R to 22RE swap once, and I know how good it was to have a complete donor vehicle. Does it make sense to buy a loose engine and then go and try to find the supporting parts? The price, at $500, is pretty low.

One thing I know. The donor engine should be from a manual transmission set-up if that's what you're going to use in your project, because the electronics are supposed to be very different between automatics and manuals, and the crank may not accept a pilot bearing if it was originally coupled to an automatic transmission.

i would find out what comes with that motor vs one with engine and harness, i would also look at other parts that u might end up needing that are not included. like the parts on air intake and exhaust sensors, also the alt, power steering, a/c all that will cost more and also a lift of the body for it to fit in the engine bay. also at that low i would be asking and over looking that motor too see what might be wrong with it, blown head gaskets or major oil leaks or lack of oil changes,

Don't bother. Get a complete parts rig use what you need and part out the rest. You will spend twice that much hunting everything else down.

Red face

I have to 2nd the last post.

For doing a swap at least I know I would want the whole vehicle

As a spare engine to rebuild I think a little expensive depending just what comes with it.

Well I'm glad to read these replies.Thanks. Maybe you're keeping me from doing some thing that I would regret later. Sure would be fun though to see a DOHC 3.4 mounted between the frame rails of my 4runner and bolted up to the transmission.

hey i know the feeling, i have been toying with the same idea, but when i go to do it will buy a rig if i can and go that route. too many times i have seen people try and part everything together and it has cost more then they wanted to spend and more time too.
