Exclamation Catalytic converter

Has anyone removed their catalytic converter and replaced it with a pipe? What were the results (other than the obvious, better performance)? I don't have emissions laws and am thinking the cat may have to leave my truck.

Louder exhaust.

I hollowed mine 1/2 way out by removing a large portion of the catalyst material and some screening that was in there. It made the exhaust ALOT louder. But I don't have a muffler either. So that might be contributing to that too(YA THINK?).

if your truck has 200000 plus miles on it the converter it is probley mostly burned out. just knock out the center and bolt it back up, it will save you a few bucks.

yup just punch it out with a broom handle and put it back in.

FYI just because you don't have emissions testing in your area doesn't make it ok or legal to remove or punch out a working cat. It's also against federal law for anybody including an exhaust shop to either punch out a bad cat without replacing it. or replace a cat that is not deemed to be bad with say a high flow cat.

Yep, that is true. It's "illegal". But so are burn-outs, as in smoking the tires.

Let me quote a chorus from a Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers song here real quick.

Yeah..with one foot in the grave...and one foot on the pedal...I was born a rebel!

lol, true true, but I didn't know if he knew it or not. So I threw that out there. Wouldn't want someone to think that it's "ok" because they don't have emissions testing.

Here in Colorado, any modification to the standard exhaust system on a vehicle is illegal. Be it installing a cherrybomb muffler, installing a Type R muffler, or removing a catalytic converter. Granted, no cop will ever pull you over for it and no one will ever lean to look under the car/truck to give you a ticket. But it's in the books.

Yeah, I got pulled over about a year ago. Cop says to me "maybe you should think about getting a new muffler, it's pretty loud". I said "um...yeah..I think it might be might be the catalytic convertor that needs replaced...but I'll keep that in mind". I didn't mention the lack of a muffler at all. He didn't bother looking either, but I think he bought it. Didn't write me a ticket anyway.

Another new smilie!? Not sure where to use it...looks cool though.

Wait...I got one...

22res arent loud enough to really attract attention even without a cat n muffler. my old 22re sounded bad with only a cat and test pipe for the muffler
my current 22rte sounds good for a 4cyl with no cat and a flowmaster

now with that being said, i got a muffler ticket in my camaro, which has 2 high flow cats and a resonator, and the whole time the cop was within 500 feet of me i kept my rpms below 1300, so if they wanna get ya, they will

Thanks guys, I don't know if I ever would have come up with punching a hole in the catalyst on my own....it's cheap so I like it.

I don't care if socialist legislators who don't like freedom, say I can't modify my exhaust. I read in chemistry textbook, when I was in college, that a cats were developed to eliminate smog by converting carbon into greenhouse gasses, the same thing that we were dooped into believing was going to end humanity, my $.02 on emissions laws.

I took off my cat and put in a piece of straight pipe with stock muffler. It sounded like a diesel tractor at all RPMs, especially idle. I went back and had a resonator put in. Sounds good now, like stock but just a hair more "throat".

I don't post here very often, more of a lurker, but a word of advice if your gonna 'gut' your cat..

The contents of a used catalytic converter are very, very harmful so wear some kind of respirator or mask and gloves at the least.

Just saying, be careful.

I didn't know that. thanks. I do know the contents are very valuable though, I sold my old 93 cat to a scrap metal recycler for $140.

i gutted my cat on my truck, and it sounds like ˟˟˟˟. i also have a cheap turbo muffler, but all you can hear is the hollow tin sound of the gutted cat. i felt no increase in power, and now the exhuast smells like ˟˟˟˟. not worth it in my opinion. gonna slap on another cat soon.
