Carburetor smells

Carburetor smells
Hey Guys,
if I am opening the throttle in my 1989 4runner (22R with carburetor, engine off), I can smell unburnt petrol. Is it supposed to be like that?
Even if I am waiting at a red light, I can smell unburnt petrol sometimes (engine running).
Could you give hint, where I could look at? Any easy fix?
Thanks for your answers...

Check the lines to the fuel pump and carburetor, along with the lines going to the carbon canister. If any of these are leaking or disconnected (like the return line to the tank, which would be flowing while it is at idle) it could cause fuel smell. I haven't heard of any carby 22R 4runners from 89 (at least in the states). Are you in England or South Africa?

I´m from Australia ... I just always assumed that I would have a 22R motor - it´s 2.4 litre carb. Never had problems so far that I would need the exact engine model.
Unfortunately it´s dark outside now, so I will have a look for the pipes.
But would this also explain the smell, when I open the throttle while the engine&electrical systems are switched off?

OK...had a check on the petrol pipes (and I have plenty, because I got a long range tank)...looks dry everywhere.
BTW: It´s an R22 engine ... it has a big sticker on it :-)
Any further hints where the smell can come from?

If no fuel line leaks, maybe a torn accelerator pump diaphragm? This post has some good links on that:

Also, I THINK there is a filter in the charcoal canister that can get clogged, leading to something bad but I am not very familiar with that particular animal.

yep peow130 is right...and im pretty sure outside of the states it goes into even later years (i seen a 2000 carb'd hilux in a pic from australia..although it could have been swapped..idk..lol)
my accelerator pump is torn on my '86 22r and it causes a unburnt fuel smell all the time..get ya a rebuild kit and rebuild the entire carb..might as well?? it's not too terribly hard...although i havent done mine yet..lol

Thx a lot for your answers, guys.
I think I will have a closer look on the accelerator pump, because today I experienced hesitation while I was accelerating ... hopefully it will not be that hard to replace it, because I don´t have the time to rebuild the whole carb...

Forgot to mention, NAPA sells the best rebuild kits - they're carb specific with all the needed parts including the accelerator pump diaphragms. Most other kits are universal and don't have all the needed parts. You need to bring in the carb number, which should be on an aluminum tag on the carb.

Just a word of warning, when you smell fuel, you have a fuel leak. Those who have seen gasoline-fed vehicle fires know they are awesome and terrible things, best avoided.
Just sayin.
