Carb Question

I rebuilt my carb awhile back, up the electric choke, and it being winter and all, i decided to by a remaned stock carb....I'm looking to fix my mistake on this choke...but I need some help. It has some sort of specialized coil spring inside a housing. This spring is supposed to open/close choke based off the temp of the coil.

I tried for HOURS and HOURS to get it to set right, and I couldn't do it...thus I was stuck w/ manually choking, and then opening it up after it warmed up.

I've read several forums, and none that I could find would give any real help specifically on what I needed, I have yet to find a FSM online to download or purchas, so if anybody knows anything, that would be of great help. Thanks...

Got voltage to the choke coil when you start the engine? Does the choke coil pull the fast idle cam up into position when you press the pedal to the floor before cranking (cold start)?

No, I could never get the spring into its correct place. It wouldn't pull the fast idle cam even when i pumped the petal. I really dont know how to explain it. perhaps when i get back around to fixing it i'll post pics to help you better understand my problem. But I ended up wedging the choke to the open (hot position? or whatever when the engin warms up) I would have to spary it with engine start, and then it would start up and i'd have to keep it rev'ed to around 1500 and after a min or two it was warm enough to stay started w/o the choke. I'll be off here for the night, but i'll check on this post in the morning. Thanks abecedarian.

I had the same problem. On mine there were two little loops on the spring thinger that connected to the linkage, and I got it wrong the first time, because it looks like only one is meant to go on. Make sure both loops(for lack of me thinking of a better term) go over the tab connected to the linkage

Also, check your cold idle adjusting screw, the first 4 months i owned my truck i was turning the wrong screw. Its well hidden, its attached to the throttle body, just pull the throttle all the way open and the screw is easy to get at

ok i'll have to take a look at it, i've got a few pretty good breakdowns of it. I don't remember seeing a cold idle adj screw. does it say anywhere what factory specs are for turning the screw? like for my 87 on fuel mixture is 4 full turns from fully closed...

hmm, thats a bit different that mine for spec, but I would think you have that cold idle screw. I never even saw it for so long. Its on the back of the carb, if you take off the air cleaner and have someone hold the go pedal down its easy to see and get at-it moves with the throttle body by the way. I will see if i can find a pic for you

pretty in-depth detail he went into, also I like his idea of using an overflow for the carb (when going on steep inclines) i'll have to rig this up.
