carb or? 22R 87 4wd

Driving to Yosemite, the engine cut out after a stop. Rough run. I pressed all the plug wires, it started up OK. Driving back from Yosemite, (where I am now) the engine cut out on deceleration. It would start up, then die. It would run if I really gave it the gas. Had to do the heel toe thang to keep it running enuogh to get close to home. Any ideas? Mechanic says he could not get the carb running, and a new one is $800! He cleaned it a little, but it is still running poorly. Whacha think?

Could be other components associated with the carb. Are you running a feedback system with the carb ( O2 sensor, HAC valve, etc. ) ? How many miles are on the engine ? When was the last tuneup ?

What you are describing may or may not be carb related.

Your mechanic does not sound like he's very competent at diagnosing driveability problems. I would suggest reading the FSM and go through the troubleshooting section on driveability issues.

A new weber can be found for 2-$300. $800 is high to say the least. Have you noticed it running rich? significant changes in altitude may affect the carb operation but more info is needed.

you can get replacement OEM rebuilt carb's for 4-500ish. Rebuilt kits are about 60-70. But IMO and experience don't always work. Sounds liek a fuel filter or fuel pump. I would look there first as they are the cheapest. Make sure your getting fuel pressure first.

IIRC the o2 sensor on a cali truck does nothing with the fuel system. HAC system is a possibility I guess, not too familiar with those. If there was a problem with that you should be able to see it in the ignition timing.
