I have a stock gearing on my yota and runing 33 yokahamas. and was wondering if i can get away with regearing the rear end only?i am on a tight tight tight budget. cant accelertae on the highway in 5th gear. cant even get up to 75 mph on flat. and really gets old up hills.

You could, but the first time you put in 4WD your transfer case will explode into little expensive peices. If you left it in 2wd it should be OK

You COULD, but I really wouldn't. I'd do both, or just do some 31's untill you have the dough to re-gear both.

if you have to untill you get enough money. Just be caregful not to put the truck in 4x4. I did this last summer. If like you said are on a tigt budget and can only afford on axle right now. Go for it.

If you couldn't afford to regear, then why did you get huge tires....you knew it would be like that if you did.

whats the usual price of regearing? on the highway with 31s i cant get over 60 unless its downhill and i floor it and get it to like 80 downhill, then i can keep 65-70, but its a PITA

you should have just settled with 32s, i am and i dont have to re-gear anything its like 33s but will only lose you .5" of ground clearance. so not bad

you can do it with no problems at all, other than no more 4x4. i would recommend that you remove your front drive shaft so that if you or someone else accidentally puts it in 4wd, nothing bad will happen as long as you dont try to use your 4wd again, at least untill you have the money to regear the front too. and rember if you can take out the 3rd yourself it will save you money, and its not that hard to do.

alright. thanks for the info. i got the truck with brand new 33's on it so i really had no choice. but i guess i will jsut wait till i pay off my debt to get my gears and i dont get my lesence back untill december anyway. thanks everyone!!

Lot's of people do the back first then go back and do the front when they have the cash. You'll be fine if you don't engage the 4wd.

Don't forget that everyone on this website is filthy rich and buys only the finest, most expensive components, and builds their entire truck in a weekend...

I agree. I have had 4.56 in the rear and 4.1 in the front for months now until I can afford to put the lockright in the front 4.56 that I have. Taking out the front driveshaft is a great idea, just incase. Also its really not hard to do yourself. I swapped out my rear third with hand tools in 2 hours.

I did the same thing but i had 529's in the rear and 488's in the front. me and my friend were messing around in some sand and i got stuck. i ran like 200 feet in 4wheel drive till i got out and it dident hurt anything but i would recomend taking out your driveline.

What??? Are you sure?? I run the same setup on 15x10s and my truck does not do that. Same engine too.

So if you go over 32", your truck will be a hog??? I did't know that! I'm looking at tires now too. I was thinking of 32x11s as well.

im debating wether i should wait till i have my front and rear regeared before i buy my 33's.

Drive in 4th not 5th lol.

Regear both ends at the same time. Do a rear locker while you're in there.

its not undrive able by any means. i got afriend that runs super swamper 38's with stock gearing on a v6 and thats worse than mine. lol.

I have 3.90 gearing in the rear of my 81 yota, and put in an axle from an 80, if im correct the ratio in 80 is 4.10, My truck has no prblems in 4x4, jumps a little if it is on pavement, or if it has to much grab. But other than that its fine. Been like that for about a year. I was told that as long as the ratios are within .3 of each other then it is fine. Sand rails sometimes do this, to get the front wheels to travel faster than the back wheels, as long as its not in a bind I think it would be fine.
