Red face Can computer problems conflict with the transmission in a 95 4runner?

Well I have been struggling to diagnose the problem in my 95 4runner's transmission. Would it be possible that it is electronical???

I don't know on the 95 ,but on the the 86 models had a separate ecu for the transmission so it could cause problems.

If you are running automatic it probably is. There a several sensors that can go bad and the tranny acts like it is missing gears. Is this happening? Do a search and you will find VSS sonsor problem. I think thats what its called.

It doesnt shift to first. seems like its in third or something. I was told it could be the solenoids. My buddy said if I clean them and change the filter I should be fine. I guess the car was sitting for months and I wounder if that has something to do with it.

It's an electronically controlled transmission, so yes....the ECU could cause problems. But, it doesn't sound like the problem you're having. Is your O/D light flashing at all?

Here's an automotive resource that will inform you on how your transmission works:

http://autoshop101.com/

And, here's the factory manual that will apply for troubleshooting and diagnostics:

http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...autotrans.html

I really don't see the tranny having problems from sitting for months. Maybe...maybe...several years, but not months. Now, if the tranny fluid is over used, then that might be a problem. Try what your buddy suggested and see where that gets you.

Well, what I mean is the O/D not only serves to tell you whether you or not you're in overdrive, but it also serves as a trouble indicator like your CEL. It'll come on...should, anyway....when there's an electronic error it can detect.

I have a feeling its the solenoids. I printed out the A340E manual and I'm wondering if the problem can be a sensor the ecu or solenoids. I am pretty sure its not a mechanical problem.

What does it mean when the O/D light flashes? I think I will start with pulling the solenoids out, testing them for 11-15ohms, cleaning them and replace the filter...dont think it has been changed for a long time anyways. :S I am concerned with the od light. When the trany worked correctly the od light would show up on the dash, but it doesnt anymore...the ECT shows up still...and thats about it.

if the no1 or no2 solenoids are below the required 11-15 ohms would that be the cause of the od light not showing up?

Search around here, you can find the codes for trans issues. Turn o/d on, key off, jumper check terminal, and count codes. Had similar issue with my sister's 92 auto after trans replacement, stuck in "limp" mode, but would manual shift, skipping 3rd. Wouldn't give up a code, so hunted thru wiring, and had to fix a jacked up connector. At least if it codes for you, it may save dropping the pan and probing around.

Well...i checked my fluid level in the trans and I am finding tiny metal shards...no bueno...also, my water temp is not showing correct temp. I am sure I need to replace it since it does move a bit but nothing like it did... would this affect the trans?
