The Shims under the 3 bad lobes all have a weird look to them but number 4 actually had wear.

All the surfaces in the bearing caps and head look good, both heads. Will check them out again when I clean them up just to be sure.

Worked on cleaning up my old original camshafts and am really surprised how well they have cleaned up so far. Still stuck with a passenger side cam that has a chunk out of it. Will post up some pics when I get done with them to see what you all think.

All of the other lifters spin freely just by putting my finger on them and trying to spin them, hardly any effort. #4 is hosed.

Something else I thought about was just getting some rebuilt heads, thoughts????

Will get back with more info as I decide what to do.

OSV, CBR, Wyoming, Terry, Hevster, thanks for listening and all the great suggestions. Will get her back up and running. I'm just slow in getting things done, getting close to 60yrs old and have to do everything outside. Sucks!!!!!!

Hevster, a member since 2012 and only 2 posts, and both of those in this thread, awesome!!!
Will do some searching and see what I come up with on salvage yards that are somewhat close. We use to have quite a few local ones but they have slowly closed their doors over the years.
Wish a 3.4 swap was in the picture, will have to stay with the 3.0 for now. If I had to do a swap it would be to a V8 and I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Cheers
Andy

Rebuilt heads are a crap shoot. There are some places like DOA that offer cams for about 525.00 a pair including core. I have no idea how good these are. You can also contact companies such as Web-cam, Crower etc. to see if they offer anything. it will be expensive though. I still think you can get a decent pair at a salvage yard.
I don't get here much which is why I don't post much. I am running my business fixing these and other vehicles.

Just wanted to follow up on how things have been going.

Finally after all this time (since mid june) I fired her up this morning. Still have some bugs to work out, but at least she started. Seems slow to turn over & studdering when first pressing the gas so not sure what that is all about at this time, hopefully just some old gasoline and possibly a worn out battery. Changed allot of things in the process of getting it back together so it could be something there also. Have not been able to drive it yet as I still need to get the shocks on, adjust the torsion bars for the correct ride height, and tighten a few nuts and bolts on the suspension, plus alignment.

Things I replaced /changed
Allot of various different seals, gaskets, and crush washers.
Complete front end rebuild, all toyota parts except for idler arm(Pro Forged) & control arm bushings(Energy Susp Poly, squeak, squeak)
Wheel Bearing kit, (Marlin Crawler)
Rotors (Toyota)
CV boot kit for half shafts (Toyota)
Steering knuckle bushings + needle bearings (Toyota)
Went back to my old camshafts, they cleaned up good enough after hanging in the garage the last six or so years
Injectors, (Denso)
Fuel pressure regulator, (Aftermarket)
Bi metal VSV, the one in the back by the fuel dampner that always breaks the nipples off, (Toyota)
Distributor cap, (Toyota)
Rotor, (Toyota)
Radiator, (CSF 3 row copper)
All the valve shims, almost all of the clearances were out of spec. (Toyota)
New lifter on #4 exhaust
Valve cover gaskets, (Toyota)
Cam plugs, (Toyota)
Camshaft seals, front, (Toyota)
Oxygen sensor(Denso), stiil have to get this in. The nuts are stripped, so ordered new ones and will cut the old ones off once I get the new ones.
For some reason or another the metal vacuum line(the ones that run under the upper intake) from the vsv to the egr modulator had clogged up, took forever to get it unplugged. Spent so much time on that I almost gave up and was just going to bypass it.
Had to get creative on cam bearing caps 1 & 6 bolt holes in the heads as all 4 stripped out. I retapped them, cleaning them up as best I could and used studs as there was still some good threads left in the heads. So I used studs, flat washers, lock washers, nuts, then drilled a small pin hole through the top of each stud and cotter pinned them incase the nuts ever decided to back off.

Cheers
Andy

Making slow progress. Figured out the slow cranking was the 6 yr old battery. Was only getting 10v across the terminals.

Still have to figure out the sputtering/studder. I'm still hoping that it is the six month old gas in the tank, if not that then my most likely culprit is probably the fuel injectors which I replaced. Think I am going to go ahead and replace the sparkplugs also as cheap insurance.

Still have an oil leak. I have checked everything on the topside that I replaced and it all looks good and dry. Thought it maybe the rear main so I pulled the cover on the tranny today and the fly wheel was nice and dry. I do seem to have allot of oil around the oil cooler though, so I am going to order some new gaskets for that on Monday then go from there.

Cheers
