Buying a used tranny & transfer case...what to look for?

Hi everyone,

I've been crawling the junkyards for a manual 5-speed W56 tranny and transfer case to upgrade my manual G58 and have found a few candidates for a good price.

Rig is a '95 4Runner manual 4x4 22re..

I'm by no means a transmission expert, so I was wondering if any yotatechs who know transmissions could give me any pointers on what to look for, check, or questions to ask.

Also been searching for front & rear 4.56 gears and am not sure what to look for on those either.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Does the yard guarantee the parts??

Do you have to pull it out ??

I would make sure it shifts and turns smooth in all the gears and both high and low range engage like they should.

also be looking for signs of leaks

stripped fill and drain plugs,

You could buy it and it checks good but fail days or weeks later you just never know

Both trannys are already out of the vehicles but they keep mileage details. Good tip on checking for stripped plugs.

Can I shift them outside of the truck? Will that show anything?

I know the risk of buying used. Just trying to minimize the risk. $300 for used vs $1200 rebuilt is a strong argument (especially when I don't need to turn in my good one for a core).

Makes it even easier .

you can feel it goes into gear smooth when you spin the input shaft it should not make any strange noises .

I am sure the yard guys will help you just tell them what you want.

Good luck.

Check for play on the input shaft and output. I put one in my 4runner that had a ton of input shaft play just for a short time while I rounded up another one.
