So I have been looking for a while for a solid front axle and i found this truck for sale, the guy said the engine started on fire and the whole truck burned. Do you guys think that the axles are salvageable. what do you guys think? whats it worth?

I woudlnt touch it..fire is serious business. Your look at ATLEAST all new seals and who knows what. That fire was HOT, just look at the truck. You know it burned for a while. Those axles were deffinatley in the fire. Ide skip it man

I know a lot of people are telling you to pass, but I drove a '67 bug for 3 years that I bought for $25 after an engine fire. I put an another engine and transmission in it, replaced the glass and rattle canned it. The metal wouldn't hold the paint for sh** and I used a lot of caulking to get the windows to seal as the openings were warped.
Offer to haul the truck away for free and inspect it very thoroughly.
It would be quite the project to bring this one back from the dead.....basically just the shell and frame but who knows....

I know of some excellent driveline shops near me so for myself I'd take the chance on the front axle if I could get it really cheap or free and have it thoroughly checked and/or rebuilt.
If you have the same options I say "Go For It".

The body is shot. The heat damages the metal - it will always rust easily. You may be able to salvage the axles but I would have a pro check them for straightness before I threw down any money on them.

I would have no issues buying it if the price is right. I doubt the axle is warped as there is really nothing for fire to consume for an extended period of time near the axle except the tires and the one side is not even burnt

X2

Yeah, the steel the axles and housing are made of are a lot harder steel than the body. It would take a long hot, hot fire to warp 'em. The gear oil isn't as flammable as gasoline and wouldn't burn nearly as hot. Get them checked, but I'll bet they're fine....except the seals and bearings. (Just my 1 penny worth)

I wouldn't pay more than $100 for it, in fact I just sold a running 84 runner for $250 with a totalled body, there are better ways to secure a solid axle.

Given the amount of paint left, i'd say it didn't get TOO incredibly hot. If you can get it for free/$50 or so, DO IT. You could sell the birfs out of it if nothing else and make your $$ back, plus with what scrap is worth these days, you could just take the truck straight to scrap and make a profit on it.

what do you mean how may it be warped. Heat heat heat... keep in mind what if you trussed the axle you have to be very carfull to not warp the axle and weld slowly. Fire could easly do that if it was a big enough fire. the truck looks ok but still im sure you can find an axle close enough to you. I would not go for it regardles of price.

The truck was on fire!

YOu'd be suprised the number of parts that are salvagable from total burn vehicles.

Not only that, a welder burns very frickin' hot...hotter than that fire was. After all, the body did not melt....which is what a welder does. Melt.

He's not even replied yet, guy. Translation....no decision he's made. Thing is, it is still being suggested he get it checked. If it checks fine, what's the problem?

THOOK...you can't compare fire to welding...Sure welding is SUPER hot,but when welding sheet metal or on an axle you do spot welds or stich welds. Its not a constant heat. You do a little hear, go to the other side and do a little...go back to the other side, so on and so forth. This keeps the metal from warping, buy only heating a small section and letting it cool before you weld near that section again. Welding/fire are diffeant all together
