Build pictures, and cost of build

Hey folks. Every year about this time there is a flood of new folks that buy a rig (usually 86-95) and suddenly want to put it up on 35's, SFA conversion, lockers, gears, etc.... and quite a few seem to think that it'll take 3-4 weeks and a couple hundred dollars to make the "ultimate" rig, or at least what they think is the right rig for them. With that in mind (and the fact that we all like pictures of our rigs) I thought it'd be a good idea to have a little post outlining what we've paid for our rigs the day we bought them, the approximate cost and time line of the build and a finished picture to show how far the vehicle has come.

If you decide to reply please post up at least a "day one" pic and a current picture and if you can ball park the cost and how long it took to get to it's current configuration it would be helpful. I'm hoping to help new people understand that it's not easy to go from bone stock to bad @$$ over a weekend and perhaps help them spend a little more wisely once they see how long, and how much, it's taken for those of you with amazing vehicles (BigBluePile, Kiyobrown, 4crawler, Wabbit, Matt16, RMA, Yotarob and a host of others with years of knowledge ) to get to that point.

Since I love my little 4runner I'll start.

Day one, refused to start often and had some interior issues. 1500$

Inside, the beginning of a mess....

The seats were ruined so badly that a 10 mile trip left me back sore for two days.

Cargo area had things living in it I think.

Got it cleaned up and running right and went wheeling. At this point I realized I had to start upgrading.

New Seats out of a 93.

Console from Nix (among piles of other parts).

Got the rear cleaned out.

Stage one complete although I later changed my mind.

About 6000$ dollars (includes the initial cost) and two years later.

The total cost does not include my wrench time since I feel that time spent under the rig is free for me.

It's gone from almost stock and beat to death to have gears, lockers, front and rear bumpers, lift, t-case plate, new seats, almost entire new interior parts, a header, intake mods, and some new skins wrapped around new steel.

And it still isn't done. I just want new people to realize that building a rig isn't an overnight affair and it takes some thought and planning.

Think about what you want three times, check on what you want to pay for twice and build once. You'll save money.

Don't have enough build to really post but wanted to say junkers88 great thread and idea. So many people underestimate the time and money involved in building a rig. And just the upkeep in fixes during the build from wheeling. Gotta love it

Sweet ride Junkers. It looks great throughout the build process, but the result is very nice indeed.

I'll play.

Nov. 2007 - Blown motor, rusted out suspension mice nest between the heads under the plenum. Total cost: FREE

Mar. 2008 -Completely stripped to the frame. At this point I had roughly $200 invested in coatings for the frame.

Aug. 2008 - Finally road worthy again - Suspension Lift, 33" tires, wheels, engine rebuild, new bearings, brakes, tie rod ends, ball joints, etc. Approx. $3200.

Feb. 2009 - Hauling firewood - Light bars and lights, front skid plate, new stereo. Up to around $3500.

Present Day - Paint, front and rear bumpers, winch, rear locker, rock sliders, road wheels and tires. Close to $5500 total.

And I do wheel it:

And it continues. Currently have an '85 solid front axle in the garage, waiting to be restored and swapped in.

This is what my truck looked like when I bought it in 2006 for $1k - '88 4runner, 4 cyl, 5 spd - windshield broken - trans shot - clutch gone - no RF rotor (brake pads were actually squeezing the cooling vanes) - rear drums seized - wheel bearings shot - interior mildewed & wet (rear window stuck open) - rusted fenders all around - god awful conversion van graphics down the side. All in all, not a bad price and plenty of room to upgrade as I made it road worthy

(check out the crusty mold on the shift boots)

-3.0L 7MGE Supra engine swap Port & Polish on the cyl head with ARP head studs(200 hp stock, ? now)
-MSD 6A Ignition, MSD Blaster 2 coil and MSD 8mm wires
-2.5" mandrel bent exhaust through a stainless Flowmaster Delta 50 muffler
-OME Dakar rear leafs, Marlin Crawler U-Bolt flip kit, Bilstein 5150 remote reservoir (177/60 or soft valving), urethane bumpstops
-T-100 caliper / rotor brake upgrade, T-100 1 1/16" Master Cylinder, removed LSPV and installed Wilwood manual proportioning valve
-home-fab front bumper, rear bumper with receiver, lower control arm brace, idler arm brace
-Toyota LSD front differential swap from an '83 Celica Supra & Elocker rear
-4.88:1 V6 center sections front and rear w/ 33x10.5x15 BFG KM2 tires on steelies
-Marlin HD W56 trans
-Hannemann front fenders
-Ford T-Bird Turbo Coupe hood vents
-110,000 candlepower driving lights (aircraft spot beams)
-rear driving lights
-SR5 gauge cluster (tach, oil press, voltage), added engine vacuum gauge
-Yaesu FT-2800 2meter 65W Ham radio (135MHz - 173MHz)
-'89 Celica All-Trac Turbo seats
-NWMP 14 gal aux tank w/ electric transfer pump (no gravity feed through the drain plug)

and a whole bunch of other stuff that I can't remember at the moment . . . . I figure I probably have close to 6 or 7 grand in parts + initial purchase price, but realistically it's probably a bit more than that. All labor was done by myself, I can't even begin to guess how many hours I have into it

Cool thread idea! All my info is in my build threads.. to much to retype. Haha.

Saw a bumper sticker once that read "You cant bolt on experience", thought that was pretty good.

But because everyone loves before and afters, heres my TR.

However long and how much $ you plan on spending...double that.

Junkers88 I am honored that you mentioned me so I'll play also

Day 1, Jan 28 2010. motor shot, no tail gate, interior stripped. I drug it out of a feild for $500.

Roughly $600 in the motor

New CV's, New brakes all around, 97 Tacoma master cylinder and booster, LSPV deleted and Jegs proportioning valve installed $300

New tail gate w/ glass and working motor $200

New paint free

Wheels and tires - $500 used. 33x10.5-15 BFG MT's

Front suspension - BJ spacers, new BJ's, Downey Torsion bars & Idler arm brace, Bronze bushings, front shocks, custom heim joint TRE's $500.

Rear suspension - Downey 2" spring, U-bolt flip, relocated Bilstiens, Sky diff armour $500

Spartan locker $250

Interior - 91 4runner seats front and rear, cheap covers, Cobra CB, custom gauges, GT Grany steering wheel $400

Drivetrain lift still in progress - 2" 4crawler BL $120, 2" 4crawler motor mount spacers $110, Bud bult cross member wi 2" DT lift, $335.

4x Innovations sliders - will be installing next week, $125 used.

Pair of 5.29 3rd members with Aussie locker, just bought them yesterday, expected delivery Wendesday 3/30/11 - $515 used.

Most recent pics with BL installed

I left out alot of misc things but I cannot put it all in 1 post. None of this includes repairing the body after a smashed into a tree on the trail, it still needs to be repainted ect, front and rear bumper the list goes on and on.

That adds up to $4955 and 14 months so far and I still have a looooonnng way to go. I hope my wife doesn't see that number. I try to be thrifty and search for used parts ect but I am still going to end up with 10 grand in this thing but it's a fun hobby and worth every penny.

Good thread Junk, I have no idea where to start, lolz.

Intial cost was roughly $5k in '99 and I've invested ATLEAST that over that last 12 years...most of the labor done by me except for the actual motor overhaul.
