Budget center console

So I just took the top off the 4runner and realized that there is no locking storage anywhere in the truck. My center console was kinda chewed up anyway, so I decided to try and figure out an alternative. I went to the local army navy store to get an ammo can. The original plan was to get a big one and bolt it down in the back, but all they had was 22 cal. I got it anyway and found that it was almost a perfect fit for inside the factory center console. Here's a few pics of how it turned out. total cost was $15 for the ammo can, hardware, and hasp. Haven't bought a lock yet, but I'll probably get a pack of two so I can lock the box that will eventually go in the back for larger stuff.

This is the area in the rear of the console that needs to be trimmed out.

Had to grind down the corners to get hasp to close completely

Re installed in the truck

Overall turned out pretty good, especially considering the cost. I had to get longer bolts to go to the factory mounts in the bottom and some self tapping sheet metal screws. The screws that came with the hasp were too soft to screw into the ammo can. Future plans include a padded armrest to get some height back an cover top and sides.

I used a rotozip for most of this project. The wand and bit for trimming out the console and the cut off wheel to clean up the ammo can. I had to remove the handle from the top and the existing lock down and receiver.
I was hoping to be able to use the hasp receiver with the existing lock down, but it was too far down and I would have had to cut the front of the console on the outside. Not bad for an hours work. Let me know what you guys think.

very nice. I'm thinking about building a new center console myself, and havent seen an ammo can used before, but its an interesting idea. I'm thinking about building one with room for radios infront of the main box (2 meter, and cb).

ps. its .223 as far as military ammo goes

What keeps someone from just taking the ammo box?

Drew - it's bolted down using the factory mounting holes. If someone really wanted it out they could probably get it, but I think the big lock on the front is a deterrent. Also decided to paint it grey to match everything else.

shoes - no idea if it would fit - think you have a different style
