I was looking at my '91 pickup this weekend and noticed that I have a broken leaf spring. Are there any recommendations on other parts to swap out while I have it torn apart.

Also, i've checked my local pick and pull's and nobody seems to have anything. I'm trying to repair it without spending a ton of money. If I go with new springs i assume i'd want to swap both sides out for an equal ride height? Thanks.

Springs are like brakes you do one side you really should do the other.

That is a lot of work to put in used springs.

Your gonna want new U-bolts maybe you can get yours off here in the great salt belt I just cut mine off.:jessica::jessica:

ive been riding on a snapped main leaf for over a year now, zuk mod keeps me level though.. you could do a chevy spring swap.. havent done mine yet, have everything but got a lousy job and never have enough money to pay for the welding to be done or new shocks.. but uunless you find some stock pickup springs, thats about the only other cheap way that I know of to go..

oh, and if you go the stock route, new bushings prolly wouldn't hurt and some new ubolts too, like the guy above said..

sounds like an excuse to do 63" chevy swap. impossible to regret

If you snapped your main leaf then nothing is holding your axle in place.

Secondary Leaf is holding it.. Its looped around both ends, it basically acts as the main leaf now, if you look at stock leaves at both the front hangar and rear shackle youll see what i mean.. I have crazy axle wrap from it though too..

Thanks for the replies. Below is a pic of the snapped spring. It is the lower spring that has the rubber dampener attached to it.

Currently i'm unable to find a used spring so I belive i'm going to have to save up the money to buy new springs.

The other problem is that my tires are shot. Does anyone think that if I get new tires this broken spring will cause wear on my new tires or should I replace the springs first. I have the money saved up for tires and if I need to buy springs first i'll have to park the truck for a while and drive something else. Thanks again for everyones help.

Well it is possible that the broken Spring may move digging into the sidewall of your new tire.

Been there bought the springs and new tire

Why does it look like theres another leaf there that shouldnt be? Unless its an add a leaf?
Either way its that leaf looking thing just above your overload leaf is what broke your number 3 spring.

Should be 3 + 1 leaves not 4 + 1.
1 is the overload leaf.

Yes when i lifted it 14 years ago they used a lift block and an add a leaf for the rear. I wasn't sure which of the bottom springs was the stock spring and which was the add a leaf. It seems that the add a leaf would be better placed on the bottom of the stack so that the stock toyota springs are all together.

I believe I broke the spring about 2 years ago when I hit a deer going 65 mph. It hit my front passenger tire and then went under and was run over by the rear wheel.

Thanks everyone for all your help and info. I ended up going with the 63" spring swap and used the Low Range Offroad kit. After that was installed I went and got some new 32x11.50 Cooper STT's. So far I love the ride and the new tires don't track in the ruts like the old tires did.
