Broken head bolt.

Well I am doing a head gasket on a 22re and those dang head bolts between the exhaust ports are always a bitch but I never had one break before. Luckily it only broke about an inch below the head of the bolt so when I get the head off I will have alot to work with but my question is how do I get this dam head off now? It seems to be frozen in the head and I cant lift the head off of it. I cant even get the rocker arm assy off of it. Im just pissed and I thought I would get some feedback.

Thanks

Andy

Everyone is a comedian. Are you sure you have all the head bolts out? There is also a small diameter bolt beneath the timing gear, under a small pool of oil.

You might try TAPPING the rocker arm assembly and head with a dead blow hammer.

I'm not real sure where you've broken it. But, if you've broken it below the shoulder of the head bolt, then you're in a better position. Otherwise, you'll have to start drilling......very carefully.

In either case, the rocker arm ass'y is going to be a biotch. You'll have to keep tapping and gently prying all around. The RA has to come off straight up. There are sleeves in the head on one side that the RA mates to that the RA hangs up on if it should get cocked to one side or the other. Then, the head should come right off......although, it can be kind of frozen on there, but still easier than the rocker arm.

Got the rocker assy off. Now I have about 3 inches of headbolt exposed. I tried wrestling with it for a bit but now I am just gonna weld on a nut to the end and see if that works.

The bolt might turn out with a pipe wrench. I would dribble some penetrating oil down the bolt shank and let that sit.
