Broken clutch troubleshooting help.

Hi guys,

I think I've got a broken clutch and need advice on checks to do.

Its not been shifting easy for awhile and a bit grindy going into reverse since I bought it. I've bled the clutch and adjusted the pedal.

It was great, smooth shifting even into reverse. I did this twice and both times it degraded in a day with this last time forcing me to tow it home.

It will not get into gear at all. What should I do first to rule out problems?

It started with being tough to shift and a bit of grinding between gears even the upper gears. I had to apply more force and pumping the clutch seemed to help at first. I do not appear to be leaking fluid. It was still topped up when it failed completely.

Advice would be great!

Was it still able to move the vehicle if yu started it in gear? Could you still shift it without the clutch, just matching engine rpm to the next gear rpm? If so, the mechanical part of your clutch is still good, and even if there's no visible leaks the master or slave could be leaking internally. I'm assuming you've also ruled out the pedal bracket, and it's not fatigued or cracked.

I have not ruled out the pedal bracket no. I crawled under the dash though and everything was still there and moving.

I'll turn it over in gear tomorrow and see if that is still good.

As for shifting, I can't get it in any gear to get it rolling to try.

Ok, if it starts fine in gear and moves the rig, maybe be prepared to take it for a long enough drive just to be able to shift it to 2nd. Since bleeding it helped for a day I'd mostly suspect the slave, master, or the flexible hose.

I'd take another look at the infamous clutch pedal bracket. Cracks can be hard to spot, since they usually occur in the corner, up high where they're hard to spot. If you aren't leaking fluid this is the most likely problem.

How do I check the slave?

Also the pedal bracket is located where exactly? Can I feel it broken if I move the clutch pedal? What is the part number for it? There is a Napa up here.

Either one should be cheaper and easier than a clutch replacement I hope.

Also, I don't appear to have air in the clutch hydraulic lines. Didn't find any the second time I bled it.

You can also see parts moving at the tranny when the clutch pedal is pressed.

Thanks for the replies.

Push in clutch pedal, slave should actuate.

Search "clutch bracket fatigue" numerous posts.

Anyone see what I see?

So I know I need to remove it. I take off all the bolts I see on the plate inside. What bolts under the hood need to come off?

Also what are my best repair options? Both best and cheapest and I can weigh the options.

Is there a stronger plate from Toyota now? I saw threads mentioning it.

What kind of reinforcing should I do if I take it to a welder?

Could my issue really be this simple? Should I go replacing anything else like the slave and master cylinder?

That's your problem chief. Take off the bracket and weld it up.

That's the cheapest so I'll try this first.

Annoying thing is I have a welder but have not learnt how to weld yet. My garage is not a fun place to spend time when it's -30C for weeks.

I'm sure the welder won't cost too much though. He didn't charge all that much when they welded on my sliders.

So all it takes is less than 1/4 of play to mess up a clutch?

Is the release cylinder the same as a slave cylinder? I'm just going over my Haynes manual before I start taking things apart.

Pretty sure release cylinder refers to the slave. Does it happen to call the other the master cylinder?

My cousin and I built a bumper for my old '84 at -30 when I was stationed in Alaska. I am grinding away happy as can be until he tapped my on the shoulder and said something to the effect of "DuDE! You are on fire!". Caught my coveralls on fire..

The bracket is the prime suspect..

So I got it out and my buddy took it to a friends house to weld it as I type.

Took me ages to get it all apart. Could not get the brake pedal off as it was too tight in there. Instead my buddy had the idea to take the whole brake booster out which worked. Just rotated it out.

My camera just died so no pictures..... I'll use the camera phone to show the welds.

-30 is damn cold, where you outside?

Yeah the bracket was torn. I put it all back together tomorrow.
