Brake Failure 94 Yota Deluxe

I am having trouble with the e-brake lever now. The ratchet does not catch when i pull it out. It does not click and lock. It just slides in and out. The button does not seem to do anything. There is no " Pull Button and Turn To Release " Is there anyway to fix these, or should i just get a used one that is catching? I found one off of a 93 4Runner. Will this brake lever bolt up in my 94 Yota Deluxe Extended Cab. I think one time the front cable broke when i pulled the e-brake on. When it broke the lever pulled all the way out. After replacing the front cable, it would not catch anymore. The " Brake Light " has stayed on since that happened also. I think the switch got messed up. I think it's time to get it working properly. I was using vice grips on it to lock it for a long time. Thank you.

Seems like when I changed my e brake cable, I noticed a couple small pawls that may have done the catching...can't remember for sure, but you may want to take a look at it and see if everything is moving freely when you pull the handle.

I have been on this board for a while, and have tried to help people. Yet, I seem to get in disagreements on the most basic stuff. I'm not trying to blow smoke up your ass, just posting factual information. Take it or leave it.
If you are in the USA, this applies.
Since 1968, dual master cylinders and split brake systems are required by law.
search brake standard FMVSS No. 105 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 105
S5.4.1Master cylinder reservoirs. A master cylinder shall have a reservoir compartment for each service brake subsystem serviced by the master cylinder. Loss of fluid from one compartment shall not result in a complete loss of brake fluid from another compartment.

Here is a diagram of how the system is looped

Because of that loop in the system for the lspv, if you loose a line in the back, everything goes.

hello RobertM,
The front brake line goes from the front pass side wheel well 'Y' to the LSPV where the fluid 'pushes' on a valve inside the LSPV. The other side of this valve is acted upon by the Load Sensing Spring movement.
The valve inside the LSPV separates the front fluid and rear fluid so they don't intermingle. If the front brake line pressure is high (as in heavy braking), it moves this valve down which blocks some of the rear brake fluid from acting on the rear wheel cylinders thus lowering rear braking. If the truck is sitting low in the rear or has a load of weight, the load sensing spring overcomes the front brake pressure and moves the valve up, increasing rear braking.
If the front brake line were to fail, no pressure would reach the LSPV to move the valve down and full braking on the rear wheels would happen.
The front brake line does not loop around from the LSPV.
The system exists to adjust for the different loads these trucks carry and minimize rear brake lockup with light or no loads.
I'm not great at explaining things, perhaps this link will help.

Thank you for the info on the braking system, and the diagrams. I see where the " pawls " are now. Maybe i can fix mine. I think the pin broke off that works the brake light switch. I know it can be punched out, and replaced. First i got to see what's going on with the "Pawls ". That east cost parts source has a new parking brake lever assembly for a decent price. Thank you for that link.

Cable Tensioner?
Hi. I still can't find any cable tensioner Spring like the one shown in recipe number 33 on the link one post back. Can someone please advise on that? It says if it's sticking it causes the cable to bunch up, and this causes wear up near the top of the handle. Mine was broke up near the top of the handle, when the handle came flying out. So i would like to make sure this is working properly so i don't break my newer front cable again. Thank you.
