Bolts on back of 22RE head

Does anyone know the size of the bolts to the cover on a 22RE head? I hired a guy to do the head and TCC and chain. When he put the head on without me there he put it on without the back cover attached. We got it running yesterday and there was oil leaking out the back. I drove it for 4 miles today and was down a quart of oil. I thought we may have missed the EGR tube bolt and when I reached back and felt it I was putting my finger in to the head.Damn

Do you mean the egr cooler plate was missing altogether? Cause that's a huge coolant passage there but none of those bolts seal an oil passage, so I don't think that's where your oil is being lost. The egr valve itself does have one bolt that seals an oil passage or maybe the rear half moon wasn't sealed correctly? The cooler plate bolts are Toyota's usual m8 x 1.25. I don't know the length, but can measure my old ones in a few days if you haven't found it by then.

I pulled the valve cover off and the half moon was missing. The bolt to hold the EGR tube that goes behind the back of the motor is missing. Is it an essential bolt? Does it help hold the EGR cover on and keep it sealed? Should I put sealer on the half moons? Thank you for your reply.

That egr cover only has 5 bolts and I imagine they're all needed for a good, long lasting seal. Any m8 x 1.25 bolt is better than none. Just throw on a washer and make sure it passes at least 6 threads into the head then tighten to about 12 ft/lbs. Both half moons get a small bead of sealer all the way around, top and bottom.
