Blown engine need ideas

Hey i have a 1995 4runner which i recently blew the engine. We wanted to the replace it with the same stock engine the v6 3.0, but we are looking at about 4,000 for a brand new one that is complete. I was wondering if doing a 350 swap would be cheaper, or if it would even work, and what are some other options for better engines?
thanks

Do a 3.4 swap. Stay away from 3.0LD. This is your chance to have nothing to do anymore with 3.SlOW.

Agreed, if that 3.0 blew up, go for better and stronger motor. I am personally going to go the 302 route when the time comes.

The AutoGods have given you a sign...

are you planing on doing the swap yourself? you could rebuild a 3.0 for way cheaper than getting a brand new one built for you. i would stay away from it however. if you want to do a 350 or 302 swap your still gonna put alot into it and alot more work. if you can do it all yourself do it and yes you can swap in a 350 using your 5spd tranny you have (you do have a 5spd right) using a bellhousing adapter. do some seaching you can find all the info here. beware of breaking things if you abuse your rig aspecialy with the big v8s and there power. what is this rig used for?

3.0 150hp 180ft/lbs torque 14-16 mpg

3.4 185hp 217ft/lbs torque 17-20 mpg

Has anyone looked into a 3.8 supercharched chevy swap?
http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/Pa...l.jsp?engine=4

260 hp 280 ft pounds of torque

dyno chart

That would be a sweet swap if you could get it in there

3.4 swap between $2500 and $3200

but worth it its a really simple swap. if you have a 5spd you could easily do it in a day. if you had the wireing kit from ORS.

Just out of curiosity, will the 3.4 bolt up to the 340H and the existing engine mounts on the frame?

You want to answer that one Brian? (Brian did it)

Yes, the 3.0 engine mounts bolt right up to the 3.4 block.

I wouldn't do it with a chevy. There is a lot of aftermarket support for a Toyota 3.4 TRD supercharger but I don't know about a chevy SCer. You need some way to manage the air/fuel ratio and timing. And then there is always the cooling issue, remember the 3.0 radiator is designed to cool about 150 HP worth of heat, when you drop in a 300 HP supercharged engine there are cooling issues to be addressed.

your other option chevy is the smaller 4.3. i am a fan of toyota all the way so for me to sugest doing a chevy swap is not a good idea imo. lots of people do it so its preference and what you want to accomplish. check out northwest offroad and downey offroad they have all the parts you would need for a chevy ford or buick swap.

my true sugestion is also the 3.4 or look into the lexus v8 swap that would be sick. i wish i looked more into it

the 3.4 will bolt up to the 340h and work with it you have to change the neutral postion switch and make a small conversion harness for the tranfer case sensors. but it works there is a small issue with the vss for the computer. im not sure yet whether its the interface between the 2 or just my vss went bad, because my setup worked with the vss's for about a week then the No.2 VSS went bad. Truck still works fine other then the cruise doesnt.

The cooling would be an issue. How did you deal with it in your 3.4 s/c swap?

Bad timing, I will have a perfectly good 3.0 for sale soon after completing my 4.3 L conversion, but I'm not even near ready yet.

Sorry.

I'm not positive that I have finished dealing with it yet, ask me next summer when we hit 100's again.

Here's my write-up, about the last 14-16 pages deal mostly with the cooling issue:

downey makes motor mounts for the 231c.i buick (3.8L). I am sure there must be a way of dealing with the heat because guys put 350 small block v-8's in these things pretty regularly. so it must be possible some how. bigger radiator and an electric fan.

Mtgoats rig has alot of cooling issues going on. its an awesome thread and lots of info about it no question but cooling a 350 is easily possible. bigger radiator, fans, ect. mt goats is also sc'd putting out incredible numbers so hes got alot to think about when it comes to keeping everything cool. again i would look at NWOR and downey for parts and info about a swap like this. they even sell the headers you could use in your toyota. Also check out Upndair's thread i think it was Crash who helped do the v8 swap in his 2nd gen 4runner (amazing work). you can find that here i think and aswell on pirate4x4. thats another real cool thread check it out
