Blinker issues

I've had my truck for over 7 years now and a month or so after I bought it I kept having the fuse for the blinkers blow out. At the time a friend of mine told me to up the fuse so I went from 10 to 15 and finally one day decided to put a 25 in. It worked for about a week and then teh blinkers took a dump. Fuse was fine and I haven't looked at it since. I replaced the blinker and also checked the wiring for the front a rear and I can't seem to find anything wrong. I fixed where the wire was touching to make it short originally but now the blinkers still do not work. Any ideas?

I've heard that the hazard switch could be influencing it and I may just have to change that out. Anyone heard of this?

Any ideas where to start looking?

When It comes to electrical I am like a blind puppy. Unless there is a switch that fits I don't know where to start.

Any help is greatly appreciated as always. Thanks

first off putting a larger amperage fuse in to solve an electrical problem will only make your problem worse. The point of the fuse is for it to pop before damage occurs to the system in your case by upping the fuse your fuse didn't pop before the short either got to the turn signal switch, flasher switch, or flasher relay any three of these could be the culprit of your problem so first off make sure you've fixed any wiring problems. So questions to answer: Do the blinkers work at all? do the flashers work? do the running lights work? the answers to these questions will help you figure out which component is dead. get a test light does power go into the flasher switch? when on does it come out? if no then the flasher switch is bad.... if you have no power at the switch it could be the relay..... if you have power out of the switch it could be the turn signal switch.

At the time I knew nothing about my truck. Like I said this was 7 years ago.

The blinkers do not work at all. The hazards do not work but the running lights do work.

I've replaced the flasher switch and i can hear it clicking when I press the hazards in. Where is this relay you speak of?

Do you mean the turn signal switch near my tilt?

<facepalm>

93YotaGuy: If you've checked the wires out to the bulbs, it's probably the switch.

Haha yeah yeah...

Well last night I checked the hazard switch, the fuse box, and the wires out to the blinkers themselves.

I have power in the fuse box and I can hear the blinker thing click when I turn the hazards on.

I think I've tried to replace the relay once before but i'll look at it again and go from there. Any more ideas?

Where is the turn signal switch located?

Is it all one piece that connects right by my steering wheel?

It's part of the combination switch, with the headlights, high beams, etc.

Shouldn't my hazards still work though even if this switch is faulty?

Maybe I am reading this diagram wrong but from what I gathered it looks like they should still work.

Okay. let me back up:
You turn the hazards on and you hear the flasher clicking off and on, but get nothing from the lights? ... not even on the dash?

Exactly... I get the click from the flasher and nothing happens.

I have power going into the fuse box and obviously from the hazard light.

I have also checked my HAZ-HORN fuse and it is fine.

And I just scrolled down the doc to the troubleshooting area (page 6 of the PDF) and it says as causes of both turn signals and hazards not operating, possible causes: Haz / Horn fuse blown, flasher faulty, turn signal/hazard switch, wiring or ground faulty.
I believe that even though the schematic implies the turn signal wiring is separate from the hazards, that the hazard wiring goes through the turn signal switch and what you see as a splice/junction in the wiring in the schematic occurs in the turn signal switch.

Fair enough. I'll replace it and see what happens. Thanks for the insight.

believe you me... I'm confused.
Tracing out wires is where I'd be going next.

Lame...

I was hoping it wouldn't come to that and you could give me an easy fix.

I'll go that route next.

Just reading your comment confused me so we'll see where it goes.

It's been 6 years or so without blinkers so what's another 5 or so?

So i'm back to trying to fix this problem. What I failed to include in my original post is that when it went out I noticed smoke and a smell of burning plastic coming from the fuse box. Since I have replaced all of the other parts that could be associated with the problem I only have the fuse box left.

My question is simply this: How do I get it out and will I have to replace the entire wiring harness?

I have managed to pull the visible bolt from the fuse box out but it is still attached at the top somehow. After hours of searching on this forum and others I have found nothing to put me in the right direction.

Any ideas are always greatly appreciated!

Just a quick update.

I have fixed the problem!!!!

I started messing with it again a couple of months ago and narrowed it down to the flasher.

Although I had purchased several flashers from autozone in the past I thought that it would not be the problem until i put an OEM one in there and BAM! It worked!

My advice to you all is to STAY AWAY FROM AUTOZONE FLASHERS. They are junk!
