Is black gooey mess in intake plenum a symptom of bad EGR or what else?

It's already .75mm over (of course you can't see that on the pistons with so much goo) and has minimal miles, like 15K miles since rebuild in '03. It's not my daily driver. I'm going to check on hone and re-ring.

looks like every 22re, I have ever seen with the head off, because the breather and the PCV allows oil inside the intake, ending up in the cylinders, which is why your 22re has an oily mess inside the plenum, just like every 22re ever made by Toyota. This is the same reason 22res' also appear to burn lots of oil that everyone complains about.
The only solution is an oil catch can.

Actually I think you misunderstand. This engine was using "EXCESSIVE" amount of oil. Nothing about it was "normal". It used quart in 200 miles sometimes; which was mainly city driving. On the highway, it used less.
I dis-assembled the original engine that threw a rod through the crankcase and it had NOWHERE NEAR this kind of oil usage. And it had 99K on it.
This kind of oil consumption could not be singularly attributed to the pcv system. What you are seeing is the result of something definitely wrong, and I believe it is the rings that are the culprit.

This engine rebuild had appx 21K, I just looked at the log. That's not a lot of miles. And it was clean when I put it together. And according to the log I assembled it in July 2002, so it's been running 21K for 12 years. That my friends is super low miles.
If I stated different stats before it was estimation from memory, the values I just referenced come from the maintenance log I have kept.

Well, it is rather embarrassing to say that you screwed up. But I did. I got the block apart and the pistons out and #1 and #3 had the compression rings on upside down. No wonder the thing was full of black goop.
Live and learn I guess.

You are the second person I have heard do this in the last week, so, you aren't alone. Atleast its an easy fix....well after you tear the entire engine down.
