Hey Guys____ I?m want to take out the stock gas tank (not sure of capacity, maybe 14-17 gals, not sure) on my stock ?85 22RE 4 Runner and replace it with a larger capacity maybe 22-25 gals. I want to put it where the spare tire is presently, and build a tire rack on rear bumper. My idea is to build an expedition rig with a longer range between gas stops. Has anyone embarked on a similar project? ? If so please enlighten me on what worked for you, or ANY ideas that you heard or read have worked. ___THANKS BAYRUNNER

You should be able to go through a racing supply co. IE: Summit or a good 4X place and get a decent price on a fuel cell. That's what I'd do.

Downey has 14Gal. Aux tanks that mount in the spare tire area, don't know how much you want to spend. There $500+

There's a place that makes "bolt in" tanks for the truck and 4runner.. I forget the name.. western steel or something.
Expensive.. $250-$400.

You can just built your tire rack that can hold gas cans...maybe two 5 gal tanks.

get an aux. fuel tank. Problem with a fuel cell is you've got to buy a pump, run lines, and I think the factory system is a return-style system.

Gonna be easier to buy the aux. tank when it's all said and done.

ive heard a lot about people putting an auxiliary tank where the spare tire goes and just having a manually controlled pump that pump the gas from that tank into your main tank. no alteration of the fuel delivery system required, you just need a pump, some lines to the main tank, and to poke a hole in the top of the main tank.

I have a 15 gal RCI fuel cell in the cargo area. Note that with these fuel cells, the capacity is misleading. I can only get about 12 gals in mine, and even then, it's likely to overflow the vent line.

I have read that the tank from a Cherokee will fit in the spare tire location.

This is going to be an EXPENSIVE project. Don't forget to add the price of a heavy duty skid plate to protect your new tank...

I did some research on this a while ago. So some of this is just from memory.

Some things I found... never figured out if they would work though. My goal was for a second tank where the spare was, keeping the factory tank, and probably transferring fuel between the two with a pump as mentioned above.

crazy idea, how about u just custom weld something about the size of ur muffler with a tube to the exhisting tank. cut a hole, put in the pipe, and reweld it together. as long as the new addition was on a downward angle... lol. seems like a crazy idea to me. so crazy, it just might work.

if u think thats bad, my first thought was cut a hole for a 5gallon bucket and caulk fit it into the tank. yea. beat that for originality.

One "simple" way to do it is with an aux tank. If you're careful where you put the aux tank in terms of height - it needs to be below the feed for the carbon tank in the engine compartment, you can have it drain right into the main tank via the stock fuel tank drain so your main tank is always full until the aux tank is emptied.

My brother welded up a custom tank for his 383 Jeep, it looked like a real pain, but worked fine. I wouldn't go welding on the existing tank without first draining it and having it hot tanked. Most body shops won't even work on motorcycle tanks due to the risk of explosion from vapors.

I bought an nwmp tank off ebay (cheap) that wasn't quite for the right model and adapted it on my 1981.

lol. i wasnt planning on welding anything. i dont have a welder. no worries, im not so dumb as to just start blastin away at my truck with an open flame. i still like the bucket idea. that way if u ever need a bucket, u'll have one nearby. u cant use it, but hey, u have one nonetheless.

if you're gonna do a cell, get an RCI.......they're a good brand. And the foam that goes in 'em, get that too. that decreases the volume, but it's a safety thing. Figure you'll need to get a low volume pump and level setup in the cell so when you pump into the main tank you know how much is left in the cell so you can turn the secondary pump off before overheating it.

My extra tank is called 5 gallon bucket sitting in the back , free , use to have spindle grease in it
