Best way to remove old engine gasket material?

cookies X 1,492 i'm all about some roloc disc. need to ditch the running boards on that thing and get some nice sliders .

I go back and forth about getting rid of the running boards, however, they do work really well for protecting the paint from stones flying up. I sure would like to see what it looks like without the boards, though!!!!

What are sliders?
