I was using yakima bars that latch onto the rain rail on the top and the cab. On a snow run last month, the bars ended up breaking the rail. I haven't tried to put the roof rack back on, it is home made and pretty heavy, it will probably keep breaking. When the top is off, its easy I just made brackets and use U bolts to bolt to the roll bar and the 4 top bolts where the top bolts on.

What do you guy usually do?

Have seen guys on here bolt them straight to the roof.

Seems they were using a gasket that sealed it. You'll have to search, I gave up the idea of a roof rack when my thule bar holding my cb antennae got ripped off on a trail, dang trees.

I bolted mind directly to the roof. I just put some silicon around the bolts and it never leaks, although i dosnt rain much here

For my 87 pickup, I got a set of these and they worked very well on the cab,

and then for the shell, I have on back, went to a junk yard and got a roof rack off a blazer and mounted it to the shell. Cost was about $30.00 for rack and hardware.



used these for a trip to SFO and back, carrying about 250-300lbs of stuff

I installed a 48" x 60" Wilderness Rack on my 89 using some compression nut looking things (no idea what they are really called). Just drilled some holes in the top, inserted the nuts and then used a tool and bolt to compress them until they swelled and bit into the fiberglass. Used some all weather sealant around them and the mounting bolts/rails and so far no leaks.

I bolted mine right to the roof and used a rubber washer and silicone to keep the water from getting in. It is 100% waterproof.

(These bolts have been replaced with shorter ones)
