Best places for aftermarket mechanical temperature/oil gauges - 22RE
WHERE IS THE BEST SPOT FOR AFTERMARKET MECHANICAL TEMPERATURE SENSOR IN 22RE??
I am going to add additional aftermarket temp/oil/volt gauges to supplement my cluster gauges. The oil pressure gauge doesn't work in the cluster. I hooked up a mechanical gauge and it had a normal spectrum of readings while the gauge cluster was reading 0. I had replaced the oil pressure sender but it didn't fix anything.
i THINK these are the correct names and locations:
1. Temperature sender for ECU????
2. Cold Start Temp Switch????
3. Temperature sender to gauge????
4. Drain plug in block
So what's the best location for the new mechanical temperature sensor? I think the block plug #4 would be good because I wouldn't have to disconnect any of the existing cables. How accurate is this location for a reading? Does it get a lot of ambient heat from being right on the block?
If I use #1 will I throw the computer off or does the signal only go to the gauge and nowhere else? #2 is a no go clearly. Am I right on #3 being for the gauge?
#5 would be to get and install one of these.
I'm not sure if the top radiator hose has enough length to make room for this thing tho. The hose passes right under the air pipe-to-throttle body so there's not much space.
Is there an aftermarket thermostat housing that has a gauge port?
As far as oil pressure goes I'm going to use the extra plug next to the oil pressure sender plug hole:

I my self would want it close to the head since that is what you want to protect from getting hot and is were most of the heat is due to the combustion process.I would not put it in a rad hose in case the thermostat got stuck closed.I would put it were the factory gauge sender is i would think they put it in that location for a reason.were are yopu mounting the gauges inside?i have been putting some thought into were to mount mine when I do it

I would use electrical gauges because if you use mechanical gauges your running coolant and oil into the cab and if you get a leak it will be a mess, but if your set on it. Use the stock temp gauge sender location which is number 3 in your pictures for the temp gauge and the plug behind the motor mount for the oil gauge. You will need to get thread adapters because most aftermarket gauge senders come with standard thread and toyotas use metric thread. DO NOT unhook sensors number 1 and number 2 in you pictures they are the cold start time switch and the temp sensor for the computer if you unhook the time switch you will have to crank for a long long time when the motors cold to get it started and if you unhook the sensor for the computer you truck will think its -40 degrees and run rich all the time.

I use a sandwich adapter for oil pressure sender, between filter and block. I also use top hose adapter for coolant sender. Both from glowshift.
I use autometer electric gauges.
Oil pressure reads great but i feel like coolant gauge takes about ten minutes to register....is that normal?

If the gauge is on your upper radiator hose then it is not reading the actual coolant temperature until the thermostat opens and lets coolant circulate through the radiator. Pretty sure thats how it works.

I used VDO gauges and put the oil pressure sender inside the passenger side motor mount and the temp gauge in the upper rad hose with an LCE adaptor. All electrical gauges. Easy peezy.

I like that sandwich adapter! How about some good interior spots to mount the clusters? I may go with just a single oil pressure gauge because I really haven't found a good spot for all three together. is there a good pillar cluster that fits first gen's easily?

Bringing this thread back to life for a quick question looking for input and suggestions.
- 87 4Runner SR5 with a 22re - 5 speed manual - almost all stock.
Just got my hands on a A-pillar gauge (3 Units)
Have the SR5 Cluster with tech - Volts (another rear volts for plugs in the cab already) - Oil Pressure - Water temp
Looking for input on what gauges are the best for the A-pillar
Water Temp - High on the list
Oil Pressure - as well
?? Questions - what's best for the third gauge
Thinking Oil Temp - might be Redundant with 2 oil Pressures
