What about products like lucas pure petroleum? the bottle says to use half the container in place of 1qt of oil. Is that stuff good for the engine? How about Restore (the silver can with blue stuff in it). supposed to restore compression and lubricate seals as with the lucas stuff.

I wouldn't run restore, seen it destroy a motor before. But have heard nothing but good form lucas.
Anyway, I just run cheapo oil. Its not worth it to run synthetic because of my oil leaks, and as long as its SAE certified, Its good to run IMO.

Yotatech has some excellent posts with debates on all things Toyota, including numerous on which is the best oil. Do a search. Check this site out too: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/
and make your own determination of which oil is best for your application (ie. racing vs. new vs. old neglected vehicle with lots of leaks and is worth $100 vs. etc.).
Cheers

If you're switching to synthetic, just make sure you've got a good running engine as far as seals go. If you've got leaks already, either fix them before you make the switch, or don't switch to synt. An existing leak will only get worse if you use a synthetic oil because of the difference in viscosity. Otherwise, you can switch to a synthetic at any mileage (whether it's 4000, or 400,000).
I use Mobil 1 0W-30 in my 88 and my 92 FJ80. No complaints. I'm considering switching to Amsoil on the next change which is soon. I run Amsoil in the Transmission, Transfer Case, and Differentials. I'm impressed with Amsoil's products. I just wish it was easier to get locally.....but you can't have everything I suppose.

The weight of the oil is related to viscosity, the reason synthetic leaks worse out of a already leaky engine is because it's molecules are smaller and more easily slip past the oil seals.

if you have over 100k miles you should stay away from synthetic's. good chance you will be burning it cause as someone else said it has smaller molecules as is more 'slippery' so will just cause problems. plus it's $6+ a quart which is too much in my opinion. unless you are really hard on your motor (like racing) i personally think using synthetic is just a big waste of money. i also read in a chilton or something that synthetics are not very beneficial to those who do a lot of stop and go driving. something about the heat of the oil and the additives in synthetics are most beneficial for highway miles. i just stuck with a good name brand conventional oil, like castrol gtx (can get for $.99/quart on sale), and i got over 220,000 hard miles on my 87. then when you get a lot of miles like 200k a good additive like lucas oil stabilizer will help prevent oil consumption. if your vehicle doesn't specifically call for a synthetic then the engineers at toyota didn't design the motor for it and is therefore unneccessary. thats my opinion of course, cause when it comes to oil you are going to get a different answer from just about every person you ask.

I've always run nothing but Castrol GTX 10W40 in my 4Runner since it was brand new. About a month ago I had the cam covers off for gasket replacement and things look pretty darn clean for an engine with 220K miles on it. I can post pics if you want to see the results.
Back in 1995 I was still a bit nervous about using a synthetic oil. However my wife's new Subaru Forester changed all that. That pancake four cylinder ran hot as blazes and would cook the heck out of oil after 3K miles - came out black and burnt smelling every time. I switched to Mobil 1 at the advice of a lot of Subaru gurus and the engine ran cooler and never cooked the oil again. From that point on all my cars have run Mobil 1 except my 4Runner because I have so many miles on it. Figure best to let well enough alone with my daily driver.
