Bellhousings

Are the 2WD and 4WD bell housings the same?

the reason i ask is that i found a 85 2WD turbo 22RE with the manual trans

i own a 87 turbo 4Runner.

i have a turbo 4wd manual trans and tcase with no bellhousing.

i searched and could not find any straight answers, maybe i wasnt using the right keywords.'

as long as they are the same motor the bell housings are the same.

22re and 22ret should be the same as well

From what I remember the housings are the same other than the side supports that attach to the motor. You would need those side supports ( Braces) that attach to the tranny bell housing and to the engine block. The bolt pattern should be the same.

Yes 2wd and 4wd bellhousings are teh same, BUT turbo and non-turbo are not.

A 4-cyl turbo manual transmission is an R series (R151). A non-turbo 4 cylinder manual transmission is a G or W series (same bellhousings between them).

But by the sounds of it, if you found a turbo 2wd, you CAN use that on your turbo 4wd.

Is there a difference between G and W type transmission bellhousings? Might want to look out for that.

he said he had a turbo trans, which would be an R, not G or W.

yes. i have a turbo 4wd trans (no bell housing). and turbo motor with auto trans out of my 4Runner. my plan is to buy the 2WD truck. take the bellhousing out of it and use it on my 4wd turbo trans and swap into my 4runner with auto trans.. and scrap the rest. (good running truck) any one interested in parts.?

I'm doing a auto to manual swap and can't find those 2 braces from block to bellhousing. This might be a dumb question but are they important lol. I'm new to yotas and never dealt with them on a Chev.

Welcome!

Yes they're important. they help give your engine <-> bellhousing connection its strength. Without them, you risk your input shaft not being perfectly aligned and other things.


Are you doing a non-turbo auto to manual swap? If so, the brackets on the auto motor are almost identical to the manual ones. You just need to drill out the threads on them if you can't find proper manual ones.
