have an ongoing problem with my 90 22re 4x4 extracab 5 sp. It runs and drives great but it really doesnt like being under 1500 rpms when Im driving. If I short shift and Im just lugging along in 3rd or 4th or 5th gear it vibrates the whole truck and feels like something bad is gonna happen. Ive checked just about everything so any advice would be great.

Might check the motor and tranny mounts (2 motor, one each side and 1 under the t-case) to see if they are in good shape.

any problems with motor mounts

Not that I could tell. If really feels like the timing is off. You know how it would really lug and shake the truck under load. thats what it feels like. I did inspect the mounts yesterday and this morning I checked the timing and adjusted the valves which were a little tight. No difference. Its especially bad in 4wd. I am assuming just becuase of the extra load. Any other suggestions?

Motor mounts are hard to inspect visually. The steel case covers the rubber part and they will look good even if torn apart. The way I check mine is to put a floor or bottle jack under the oil pan (use a block of wood to protect the pan) and start lifting. You'll see the engine and frame start to rise for a while as you take the weight of the motor off the frame and suspension. Then, if the mount is broken, you'll see the engine keep lifting and the frame stop and the broken motor mount will separate.

Just wanted to give an update and say that I totally rebuilt the top end of the motor and timing chain and the problem is exactly the same. Im off to thoroghly inspect the mounts.
