Backing Plate Eliminators...pros and cons????
I'm knee deep in axle grease rebuilding my 84 fornt axle and the brake backing plates are rotted to hell. Anyone have any info on marlins set http://www.marlincrawler.com/axle/fr...ate-eliminator? Seems like a good deal, but want to know if I should just source a set of used ones.
Oh yeah, my truck is an 87 thus the thread residing in the 86-95 section.

Personally I like them. I have T-G's kit on my Trekker.
I have had rocks get stock between the disk and backing plate causing a God awful noise in past trucks.
While you have it apart you might also consider the heavy duty wipers that eliminate the felt wipers on the knuckle balls, Longfield has a kit,.I am sure marlin does

Crappy phone screeN cap..
These things would probably be more beneficial in the long run vs. The backing plate eliminator kit..

hey, brian, long time no see.
that ranger you saw had no backing plates. they 1. rotted away, and 2. kept getting sand, rocks etc. stuck in them and squeeling. theyve been off for a good year or so, and so far theres been no noticeable difference, even in rain, snow etc.
i'd say go with 4crawlers suggestion. less of a hassle.
im headin to the junkyard sometime this week btw, ill p.m u about those clusters.
does anybody know if i.f.s. backing plates, or 2wd plates will fit on an 84 solid axle? i might be able to get a set of those for ya

Keeps mud and gunk build up down. You do lose the brake hardline clip though. You can get a tube clamp and attach to a knuckle stud and work the same way. I like the new TG knuckle sweepers too. Better design than Longfields sweeper which are too stiff IMO.

Also would be interested to see if the backing plates of an ifs truck would work. I have the entire front end from the 87 I can pick apart.
