Back Door Light Disable

Getting tired of seeing the 'BACK DOOR' light on my dash.

My 4-Runner is an '88, bikini top. Is there a way to disable this at the plug that would run to the top?

Damn, I feel like a tool. Since my rear window has never worked (and I don't care), I never put 2 and 2 together. I've been riding around with that light on thinking it was related to having my top off.

Thanks Brian!

Thanks Tofer! I was thinking "Safety Lock? What the hell is that and how can I disable it?"

That was the easiest 'fix' in the history of YotaTech, I bet.

you have to take the interoir piece of the gate off, remove the metal plate behind it, carefully pull of the plastic weather proof thingy, then find the sensor and unplug it. i've unplunged mine about 1 yr. ago cause the sensor was shoot and i didn't feel like buying a new one.

Thanks LTrunner.

For any idiot like me that spends 1.5 hours searching the forums for this issue, I wrote up a FAQ.

1. Locate Tailgate. It's in the rear of the vehicle.
2. Handle and Locking Mechanism are on the inside of the tailgate, at the top.
3. Extend Index finger, and push on the lock in a downwards motion.
4. Notice 'Back Door' light go off on the dash.

Excellent write-up!!! Why is that not in the FSM?

Usually, when I notice the back door light is still on once I've climbed into the cab I'm just too lazy to get out, go back around, and lock the tailgate. So, I instead push the little button that makes the window go up which automatically then locks the gate. However, you have the top off which nullifies that...that safety bolt is out. I, on the other hand, have bypassed the factory electrical safety set-up (courtesy of 4crawler's cheap tricks) and can save myself all that hard, manual labor. Is it laziness or just ingenuity, though?
