1987 4runner
My keyed control switch is broken on the inside, the plastic part is messed up and broken, it works with a screwdriver but when the key cylinder is put back in and turned it just moves and does not work. Has anyone done any mods to this? IE change out for another type one that fits/works. The part is discontinued so can't buy a new one. I can mod anything really if needed just need to know what way to turn. If not I guess I will be looking to buy a used one. Wrecking yards around here are slim pickins for 1st gen 4runners.

Yeah, did the same. Tried ordering them from 2 places also. got a e-mail a few days later from each after saying they were listed still but the item is discontinued. seems a lot of Toyota online parts places keep items up for sale well after they are discontinued. same thing happened with a few parts to me already. thanks though.

I guess couple of options are:
1) Keep on checking the junkyards for first-gen's,
2) Find different gen whose switch part may fit the key cylinder, OR
3) Find other gen's that would fit in opening and install it, and use key for that donor truck

How about this.

Make a plate and install two N.O. micro switches from a microwave.

Place One above the key cylinder and one below the key cylinder.

Add a bar to the key cylinder that can actuate those switches when the key is turned.

Wire in one switch with positive polarity and one with negative so the motor will go up and down.

Now it will forever be repairable as micro switches are dirt cheap.

That is a pretty good idea, I just made a automatic chicken coop door out of a paper shredder motor and a few relays and micro switches for the limits, I bought 10 of them for $7 and only used 2. I guess if I can't figure out something else this would work well.

I just had the key switch out on my 94 when I extended some wiring for an inside rear switch.
It looked exactly like the key assembly for a 1st Gen 4runner if my ancient brain recalls correctly

The cylinder by itself would not be able to activate switches. You would need to add a mechanism to the cylinder to have it actuate the switches. The switches with the little bars would be better. They can easily be salvaged from oven door lock assemblies.

This would be a last resort of course. Finding a good oem would be best
