aux fuel tank 1st gen runner
About half way down the page.

Anyone tried something like this? I was thinking that an aux tank put in where the spare tire goes would be a lot better than keeping the stock "rock anchor" of a fuel tank that comes on the 1st gen runners. Then all you need to do is route a long filler neck to the fuel door for the "stock" look, find a place to mount the spare so it doesn't hang down so far and pull the factory fuel tank off and chunk it. that would free up room where the stock tank was for things like an OBA tank etc.
Thoughts?

I think it is a good Idea. My truck is a 95, and the tank is seriously beat. I am looking into the 11 gal for mine, not for clearance but for range... 240 miles out of a tank is no bueno.
Good Idea to put OBA where the stock tank sits

Hmm, Ricky have you just considered a drivetrain lift..?
Im not sure what it would take to mount that tank I dont like the idea of completly chucking the stock tank..
Besides, where the nex tank would go is the perfect spot for OBA...

It seems to me, that I remember reading a few old threads here, and on pirate, 'bout putting in a larger gas tank from an older ford van. It fits between the frame rails, where the spare tire would go on the 2 gen 4runners, and 3rd gen trucks. It was a bigger tank, smaller profile/footprint, (flat and square-ish) and not such a rock anchor......

Comsidered it but didnt' think it'd do much for the factory fuel tank hanging down half a foot. I could do a 2" body lift, 2" DT lift and get the fuel tank lift also but that's a lot of crap o deal with. From looking online the fuel tank in the 4runner now is 14 gallons, so is the replacement. I'll have the weight more centered in the frame and farther back to offset the weight of the motor. It's slimmer and I can build a plate for it. The spare can go in the cargo area or on a rear bumper and the factory fuel tank goes away so I can mount an air tank, OBW, whatever. All I need to do is save up the 500+$ for the tank and it's a done deal. Might have to do a write up on it if I can ever get the money saved.
