Is Autozone retarded, or am I? (cv boots)

So I got the output from the front differential measured around 4.5" outside diameter (for whrer to attach the boot), and then like 3.75" on the CVjoint, but autozone sells both INNER and OUTER CV BOOT KIT as the same size boot - 3.75". No way right? I mean Im sitting here holding the new CV boot I have, holding it on top of the currently installed inner boot (differential side) and its sitting on the second row of graduated corrugation of the boot. BTW is the inner, or is the outer cv axle boot the larger of the two?

You can see pictures of the two (different) boots at RockAuto.

You can blame Autozone if you like, but I'm going to bet someone returned a "kit" mis-matched, assured the counterman it had never been used, and he put it back on the shelf. It's a bummer for you, but you might think of lightening up on the folks trying to stock these items.

Before you go back, you might think of pricing a rebuilt half-shaft. I've replaced my share of boots, and it's a greasy, fussy job. For not much more than the price of a pair of CV boots, Autozone will sell you a reman, which means someone else (who knew what he was doing and had the right tools) did the greasy work for you.

No, I actually looked it up myself on the Autozone website after the guy told me that both boots are the same size. The site shows the measurments and they are the same in both boots. The boots that I do have arent from Autozone, but came with my CV joints, which I am replacing despite the grease.

They're a little more expensive, but buy the Toyota parts from a dealer, online dealer, Amazon, EBay, etc, part number: 04438-35021.

I didnt know this!

But this is my problem. And it continues on rockauto.com, because it lists an inner and an outer cv boot right next to each other here with virtually the same diameter:

i paid $55 per CV axle at autozone ($10 core charge) and actually got toyota axles back, they have the 3 indentations on the inside of the flange star that goes to the diff side (if that makes sense)
a lot of rebuilts have a flat flange with no indentations.
it was easier and worth it to me instead of messing with swapping CV boots and greasing crap.

Not many parts I get from the local part stores but CV shafts is one I will get. Well worth the cost and the effort needed to try and rebuild them yourself.
