auto trans problem

Over drive quit working on my 89 rw drive truck. I changed the fluid and filter. The fluid was dark and appeared to be burnt. With the shifter in drive everything appeares to work OK, the truck just never goes into overdrive.
If I try to manually shift it doesn't shift properly from low to second. I let off the gas at about 35 and it finally goes into second at about 20mph.
If I keep working with it it eventuality starts shifting right and then overdrive starts working. The next time I drive the truck it's the same thing all over again. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be ?
Thanks for helping.

I don't know if those older OBD ECUs had any transmission codes or not. One thing to consider is possibly the shift solenoids need replacing. Of course burnt dark AFT means you might need a lot more than just that.

Thanks , sorry for the late replay. I've been busy researching. I got a code 51. I will check the volts on the throttle position sensor. I 'm doing more tests but I'm about ready to drop the valve body and see what's sticking. Your probably right about more problems but I can't afford a trans rebuild now. I need to keep it going a little longer if possible.
