Question Anyone ever put in a stage 1, 2 or 3 chip into an 88 4runner?

So I went ahead and bought a cold air intake, a high flow cat and am gettin ready to have dual exhaust installed. Now my question is, should I put in a new chip? My truck is an 88 4runner sr5 with the 3.0 v6. If I do install one of these chips, will there be any quirks that I have to deal with? The chip im looking at is pre-programmed for my truck. I was told by one person that I would have to switch to high octane gas. Is that true? Will I see a noticable increase in horse power?

You are wasting money and time.
Do a search....you will find many threads on the 3.0 V6.
It does not respond well to upgrades that is why people either roll with it stock or swap it out.
Not every engine is high horsepower build-able.

I also would suggest staying away from the chips that companies claim to "Add HP"

IIRC it just causes the EFI system to add extra fuel, without adjusting anything else. All this does in turn is lower your MPG's without giving you any noticable HP gain.

Without throwing a bunch of money at it, the 3.0L is not the best engine to hop up.

i got one of those 'pre programmed' chips, and yeah all it did was raise my RPMs and drop my gas mileage. i ended up selling it to a mexican at the local home depot for like 20 bucks.. lol

The cold air intake is a waste of money, as many members have come to find out. The best mod it seems is to eliminate the silly elbow on the intake, and just let the air come straight in.

The dual exhaust if done correctly can be helpful. But if all you did was add on a cat back fake dual exhaust, you did absolutely nothing.

The MAF conversion I tried on my 22RE made a huge difference. Unfortunately, I had to remove it since the electronics wasn't rated for under-hood conditions.

Toyota ECU's are notoriously locked down and don't respond to chips or reflashing.

tc, not 100% true, you can play with the ecu a tad bit, but not enough to really do much. so its true, but not... if you want to get technical... lol

The 3.0 ECU is locked down almost as tight as Ft Knox. The 22re....there is a lil "play" with the e prom programming....

the only things you can do for these motors on the cheap, and i have a v6, is the Short Ram intake (there is no CAI for our trucks unless you want a snorkle!!!), get an exhaust system no bigger than 2.25" (and if its gonna be a dual setup, run a smaller pipe with a crossover right in the middle otherwise you lose backpressure and the v6s need it!) and keep doing your regular maintenence(cap, rotor, wires, plugs, etc.)...

you could drop 1000 bucks into the v6 and only net 15hp to the wheels, so i warn you, unless you like being poor, dont hop up this motor...
