Anyone with an auto tranny......

Could someone measure the length of the auto trannys dipstick for me? PLEASE!! Just the lenght of the rod itself, not including the cap.

I think mine doesn't have the right one in it and would like to make sure.

Thank you!!

My dipstick is 26" long, but the tube down to the tranny pan is longer than that.
Is the dipstick suppose to go out of the tube and into the pan to get its measurment or does it stay in the tube(meaning tube is longer than the dip stick) and the fluid risers up the tube a bit.. thus giving you a measurement?

If i add enough fluid to rise up on the dipstick. its over full and it blows out the tranny when it gets hot. I had drained everything and just put in the amount the manual said to and it seems fine, shifts fine.. no blowing out etc... but i hate not knowing if the level is correct or not. I'm putting on a tranny cooler and i would assume it would take more ATF as well.
Its making me worry because we are moving here in 3 weeks and that truck will get a workout hauling a trailer.

I'm thinking the pan is not the right one and has a slightly longer dipstick tube. It has some paint pen writing on the bottom of the pan when i bought it saying "dry, CS". The pan musta been off for somthing for a mech to write that on there. ??

Assuming the dipstick is suppose to go into the pan some, does anyone know how far it goes in so i can extend my dipstick?

Sure you checking the fluid level right! Engine running? Then put it in gear to get the fluid moving a bit then back to park! Im sure you know that just bringing it up!

Make sure you're doing it like that or it will be overfull.

Make sure it's been driven for awhile to warm up the fluid.

It's not checked like the crankcase.

Yah, i downloaded the fatory repair manaul when i did the 3.4 swap so i'm doing what it says to in the book. Running at normal temp.. level surface, park to low.. then back to park. Doesn[t hurt to ask though...

I just took some wire and taped it along the dipstick tube to get as accurate measurment as i could and its 31.25" long. No wonder i'm not getting a reading on my dipstick if the dipstick is suppose to go into the pan.

I'm thinking the pan is not what came on it unless the tube is suppose to be that long. ??

Anyone know how far the dipstick is suppose to go into the pan?

Thats measuring the lenght of the tube from where it comes out of the pan.. all the way to the top.

Now that i'm looking at it again.. i need to take 3/4" out of that because the dipstick goes into the tube a ways... So.. from where it comes otu of the pan all the way up to the end where it starts to buldge out. That is 30.5" long.
This is measured on the outside by taking a string and taping it along the outside(conforming to its bends).

IIRC, the fluid in the tranny fills into the tube up to a certain level.
That is where the fluid contacts the dipstick.

It's not like the motor where the stick actually dips down into the fluid.

ok.. thats what i needed to know.

I had to move the dipstick tube when i put the 3.4 in. Its at a different angle now. It goes up much quicker than it did before. So i guess i've changed its angle thus changing its reading i guess.? I thought they went into the pan so me changing angle wouldn't matter but i guess it does since the ATF rises up in the tube. The exhaust runs where it used to be.. so i can't change it much.
Now what to do..... mmmmm.....

Thanks for the info.. at least now i know i don't have the wrong dipstick.

You might wait for somebody to confirm that, notice the "IIRC" part.

I didn't know what IIRC meant...

Well i'll see if anyone else chimes in. I guess Monday i could call a Toyota dealership and see if any mechs would know or not.

At lease i got my ADD wired up today and it works!(finishing up small things in the 3.4 swap).
