another gauge swap issue (kinda)

ok....ive got an 88 22RE 4x4, 5sp that had the regular cluster with only the speedo, fuel and temp gauges.

i found and installed one from an SR5, 22RE 1988 5sp. i did the whole oil sender thing, otherwise the tach and all other info plugged right in with no mods.

my concern, is that the speedo reads way less than my original. they both have a full sweep to 110mph, so thats not the issue. my question is, how difficult is it to swap out just the mechanism that moves the needle? has anyone done this? obviously, the new one i got is worn pretty bad or something else is wrong.

when im goin 85, it shows about 60.

Since the speedo reads the speed information from the transmission, it might have been set up for something with a different set of rear end gears. You might be able to switch the plastic gear that drives it to read correctly. I'd contact a speedo shop in your area.

ive pretty much narrowed it down to the actual cluster speedo mechanism. the truck i got the sr5 cluster from was all stock, same year and tranny.

ill pull it all apart and see ifi can transplant the internal part of the speedo from the cluster. itll be like heart surgery. hehe. i guess i should down a couple cold ones first to steady my hand!

Yes, but it may have had a different set of rear gears, meaning the tranny might have a different plastic drive gear for it...

is it common for trucks of the same year/trans/engine, etc to have different gearing?

thats strange. swapping the speedo will fix it if thats the case. but ive been driving it more lately and whats even more strange, is that the odometer seems to be right about the same as my old cluster. i wont know for sure till i fill up the tank again, but so far....its reading close enough for me to assume the spring/clutch mechanism in the speedo is worn or faulty.
