Another Eb 261C/268T thread

OK guys going through a rebuild now after spining a rod bearing at 172,000 miles. This thing has been trying to die for 5000 miles with a rod knock !!!!! Finally went and took out the rod and crank at the same time to the point it fused one side of the bearing to both the rod and the crank.

Anyway back on point.

Looks as though I will be boring out 20-30 (havent decided yet) and quite possibly decking the block 10. As well as getting the street (not RV) new assembled head from EB. The engine is a 1987 Carb (not Weber) 22r. No lift and still sitting on stock 28's???? I plan on going no more than 31X10.50's or 30X9.50's (havent decided yet). No plans on a lift. (maybe BJ's and a 2" add-a-leaf) if i happen to rub the 31's on my wooden flatbed. Truck weighs in at just over 3000lbs. (without my fully loaded gull wing plastic toolbox and spare tire. guessing 3100 with those)

Ted suggested the 268 with the blocked decked 10 thousanths and using 7 degrees for the timing. I am an occasional off-roader and use the truck to drive to work every day up a pretty steep mountain at roughly 45-55 mph. Those is PA that have traveled Rt 309 from wilkes-barre to Mountain top know this 5 mile stretch of the mountain. Which before the engine failure i had a hell of a time getting up in 4th gear unless i get a run in 4th at 60mph. THe truck has no tach and i didn't like the idea of dropping into 3rd at 55-60 mph. Big difference in rpm from what i can feel with this 5sp tranny. Felt like the valve train was gonna fall apart. (The the only thing I dislike about this truck is the rppm difference between 3rd and 4th)

What i am thinking is going to happen is with the block decked, boring and 268 that it will add gobs of upper rpm power and sacrificing my low end off-idle power. I would rather not sacrifice this for off-road ability. I am curious to the lopey idle as well. I don't care though. I love the sound of a SBC on a 3/4 cam.

I am thinking of using this combo trying it out and then maybe getting the adj. cam gear from LC to advance the cam tinimg for low end if i think I will need it.

Any thoughts on this will be greatly appriciated.

Ted must have been thinking you have fuel injection when he said run timing at 7 degrees. Stock for FI is 5 BTDC. Carb is 0 with dist vacuum lines removed and plugged.

Here's a good thread by Ted on building a 22R/RE with a little extra oomph: http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showfl...&o=all&fpart=1

Assuming I go with an Engnbldr head and cam, I'll get the RV head and a 268. Same as you, I want enough oomph to use 4th going up hills and hold 5th on mild highway inclines. From what I've read, in general people seem happiest with the 268 for all around use.

I read somewhere that the LCE adjustable cam gear won't work with carbed engines because the fuel pump drive lobe is in the way. Will taking .010" of the deck while using a new, unshaved head affect cam timing enough to worry about?

My exact set up with .20 over on my 22re set at 8 degrees and I have 35 x12.5's 5 speed 4runner and very very happy with it as it runs, only have 320 miles since complete rebuild but still a huge improvment over the stock set up not sure if the difference is going to be that useable for a carbed motor but well worth listening to TED when it comes to these motors.

i just did same thing.follow teds instructions to letter. You will have no gobs of upper rpm power. You will have no super low end torque. What you wind up with is a 22r that runs a little stronger than stock, but its not going to add 2 more cylinders.Gears will help you more than horsepower if hills are your issue. My trucks holds 5 th better than before the rebuild, but it aint no small block chevy.I row the gearbox pretty hard to keep up with I95 traffic, but the truck does go a little stronger.I had 7 thousands taken off the deck, which works out to a 3 degree advance. Will try timing at 7 degrees to see if I get any more power
